Sound good (We think so too!) Heres what you would do:

  • Ensures that practice time is sufficient for all students to learn skills
  • Follow logical skill progressions
  • Foster personal growth personal safety stroke development and fun during each swim lesson.
  • Recognizes and corrects improper strokes or skills using positive feedback
  • Communicates effectively with students in a patient friendly manner
  • Show how you are a positive role model


OK Im sold! What do I need to qualify

  • Must be 16 or older
  • Current YMCA Swim Lesson or Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification or complete Southeast Ventura County YMCA Swim Instructor Training before teaching first lesson.
  • Ability to swim 50 yds/m freestyle backstroke and breaststroke with correct technique.
  • Other Current Certifications:
    • CPR PRO/AED/First Aid from one of the following certifying organizations:
      • American Red Cross
      • American Heart Association
      • American Safety & Health Institute
  • Ability to communicate effectively to swimmers and their parents/guardians.
  • Ability to plan lead and participate in swim lesson activities.
  • Ability to lift equipment and to lift a small to average size child.
  • Ability to see and supervise children.
  • Ability to spend 2-4 hours in the water at a time.
  • Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
  • Sufficient strength and ability to react to emergency situations in an indoor and/or outdoor environment
