The City of Onalaska is seeking to hire a regular part-time Grounds Keeper (58 hours bi-weekly) in the Parks & Recreation department. The Grounds Keeper is responsible for the meticulous maintenance and enhancement of city parks and green spaces ensuring they are aesthetically pleasing and safe for public use. This role involves performing a variety of groundskeeping tasks including landscaping custodial duties athletic field preparation and seasonal maintenance under the direction of the Park Manager. By maintaining park assets and responding to public inquiries the Grounds Keeper contributes to a positive and enjoyable experience for community members.
Essential Job Functions:
- Maintains areas of parks and recreational facilities including but not limited to mowing irrigating cleaning and general landscaping.
- Performs a variety of custodial tasks typical of public buildings and facilities. Tasks include but are not limited to: cleaning floors remove and empty trash; clean windows walls ceilings and light fixtures; clean sinks lavatories and urinals in restrooms.
- Performs the seasonal start-up and winterization of parks and recreational facilities.
- Prepares and maintains athletic fields for various recreation programs.
- Removes snow and ice from parking lots walkways and park roads; floods and maintains ice skating rinks.
- Maintain records and submit reports on maintenance activities in parks and at Aquatic Center.
- Answer questions regarding parks and facilities and inform users of park rules and regulations.
- Performs inspection of park maintenance equipment and vehicles.
- Performs preventive maintenance and cleaning and makes minor repairs to park equipment and vehicles.
- Performs regular maintenance of aquatic center equipment including but not limited to pumps motors filters valves and meters. Maintains maintenance logs.
- Assists with pool maintenance operations.
- Other duties as requested or assigned.
Compensation and Benefits:The 2025 starting wage for this non-exempt position is $20.99 per hour (grade 1 step 1). Flexible schedule is available Monday through Friday between the hours of 7am and 5pm.
The City offers competitive benefits to include health and dental insurance with 50% of premiums paid by the City effective the first of the month following 60 days of employment. There is no deductible or co-insurance amount for the health insurance plan. The position qualifies for automatic enrollment in the Wisconsin Retirement System (pension plan) providing a lifetime payment once vested and upon eligible retirement. Additionally the City offers several voluntary benefits such as vision flexible spending life insurance disability insurance deferred compensation critical illness cancer accident and pet insurance. Paid holidays and starting 2026 paid personal days. Access to an employee assistance program (EAP). The City of Onalaska is a qualifying employer under the Public Student Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Federal Program.
