Job Summary

THE POSITION

This Stagehand II position is vital to the technical theater operations of the SAFE Credit Union Convention & Performing Arts District. This position supervises work related to the operation maintenance installation upgrade and repair of the Citys theatre equipment including lighting sound electrical and rigging systems. Additionally this position ensures the City remains compliant with federal state and local health and safety standards and regulations. This position keeps accurate records prepares required reports and represents the City to external clients.


IDEAL CANDIDATESTATEMENT

The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge in technical theater operations and experience with troubleshooting and performing maintenance on technical theater systems and equipment. They will have strong customer service skills and experience working in fast-paced environments. The candidate will have experience with ensuring technical theater operations remain in compliance with federal state and local health and safety laws regulations standards and procedures.

The ideal candidate will possess knowledge and experience with the following:

  • Live Theater Touring and/or Convention Centers
  • Lighting Audio Electric and Rigging Systems
  • Meyer GALA and Electronic Theatre Controls (ETC) Systems
  • International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Contracts

Under general direction to perform technical work which involves the installation operation maintenance and repair of stage equipment for a variety of theatrical events. Incumbents of positions in this class prepare and set up the theater for a variety of professional theatrical productions and operate stage equipment during performances.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

A Stagehand II is distinguished from a Stagehand I in that the former has responsibility for planning and assigning work and acts as a lead worker in the performance of duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Depending upon assignment duties may include but at not limited to the following:

- Sets up operates maintains and repairs sound lighting and staging equipment for a variety of events and productions.
- Operates sound consoles controlling quality and volume of sound in accordance with prearranged standards and plan.
- Operates lighting console and related controls during performances according to an established plan of action.
- Operates stage rigging and rigs.
- Adjusts stage scenery and curtains as necessary for various productions.
- Acts as property worker; performs stage carpentry work; builds and dismantles stages furniture and displays.
- Assists different promoters using facilities installing and removing equipment.
- Maintains inventory of sound cables and lights.
- Keeps properties and facilities clean and in order.
- Performs related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

- Safety rules building codes and equipment operation of a theater stage.
- Electrical principles and practices.
- Theatrical lighting systems and techniques.
- Theatrical sound systems and public address systems.
- Techniques of stage preparation for theatrical or related productions.
- Care and maintenance materials and procedures for stage equipment.
- Theatrical and stage terminology.

Ability to:

- Install operate and maintain sound and lighting equipment.
- Perform stage carpentry work.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with employees and the general public.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Driver License:

Possession of a valid California Class III Driver License at the time of appointment. Loss of the Class III License is cause for discipline. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Ability to read and write the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance.

Stagehand I

Two years of experience in stage work including experience in sound and lighting work.

Stagehand II

Two years of experience as required for Stagehand I and one year of supervisory or lead worker experience over employees performing theatrical stage maintenance duties.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD:

Employees must complete twelve (12) months of probation at a satisfactory performance level prior to gaining permanent status.

2. Training and Experience Exam: (Weighted 100%) The questionslocatedat the end of the application are the Training and Experience (T&E) Exam.Responses to the T&E questions will be rated and scored. This exam will evaluate the relevance level and progression of a candidates educationtrainingand experience. The exam score willdetermineyour ranking on the eligible list for this job. When completing the T&E questions please note:

3.Eligibility: Candidates who pass the Training and Experience Test will be placed on the eligible list. The hiring department may contact candidates for interview at any time during the life of the one-year list. Candidates eligibility expires one year from the date of notification of a passing score for theStagehand IIexamination.


4.Screening Committee: (Pass/Fail) All candidates that pass the examination and are in one of the top three ranks will have their applicationforwardedto the hiring department for review. The hiring department will select the most competitive applications for further consideration. Human Resources will only evaluate employment applications for the minimum qualifications asstatedon the job announcement for applications selected by the hiring department.


5.Conditional Hire:Upon receipt of a conditional offer the selected candidate must complete and pass LiveScan/fingerprinting. If applicable candidates may also need to pass a pre-employment medical exam controlledsubstanceand/or alcohol test andpossessany required licensure or certification prior to receiving a start date from the Department. Failure to meet these prerequisites will be grounds for withdrawal of your conditional offer of employment.
