POSITION SUMMARY
Performs a variety of structural inspections related to all residential and commercial construction in the built environment throughout St. Joseph County.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Inspection Duties:
a. Inspect residential commercial and manufacturing structures for compliance with State Building codes
b. Ability to read blueprints and drawings.
c. Resolve minor and moderately complex problems encountered in the day-to-day inspection of housing.
d. Explain Building Codes to architects engineers contactors and the public.
e. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle and maintain daily mileage and inspection logs.
f. Coordinate with other inspectors to schedule group and/or final inspections
g. Ability to take and pass an ICC Residential Inspector Certification test within 2 years of hire.
h. On call evenings and weekends for special projects e.g. Rebuilding Together Habitat for Humanities and for emergencies e.g. natural disasters.
i. Assist other inspectors when needed
NON-ESSENTIAL/MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
Perform other duties and assume other responsibilities as apparent or as assigned.
EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Four years of experience in construction construction management or code administration and enforcement.
2. Preferred associate degree or bachelors degree in construction management civil engineering
architecture legal studies or other applied sciences
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Understanding of City of South Bend Municipal Code St. Joseph County Code of Ordinances State of Indiana law and applicable federal laws.
2. Understanding of the City of South Bend and the St. Joseph County Zoning Codes.
3. Ability to understand and read site plans building plans and surveys.
4. Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors employees other officials and the public.
5. Ability to communicate by telephone in person in written form or email.
6. Ability clearly communicates in both verbal and written communication.
7. Ability to effectively utilize Microsoft suite applications and other software packages.
8. Ability to use a scanner copier and printer.
CERTIFICATES LICENSE REGISTRATION:
Must hold a valid Indiana Drivers License.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed in office settings with moderate temperatures inside and outside in all types of weather. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate in the office and loud in the field. The entire office is smoke free.
