DescriptionThis position is central to the missionaries core experience as they are provided high-fidelity practice opportunities to Invite others to come unto Christ by helping them receive the restored gospel through faith in Jesus Christ and His Atonement repentance baptism receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost and enduring to the end. This position will manage multiple part-time training teams through part-time supervisors; this role is responsible for facilitating the teaching experiences of missionaries during their training at the MTC. They will contribute to the strategic long-range planning and implementing of related aspects of the curriculum and training organization. This role oversees the hiring for the teams reporting to them; managing and leading actors supervisors and all aspects of the pre-service and in-service training for actors and supervisors.
ResponsibilitiesThis position manages the work of other employees (may include mixed workforce). They will report directly to the Sr Mgr Non-Language Training.
Contributes to set the strategic direction for Training teams within their areas of responsibilities (10%).
- Works with the direction of Training Manager 3s to establish short and long-term training objectives and goals and training metrics pertinent to the missionaries teaching experiences.
Manages personnel (45%)
- Responsible in partnership with HR to hire or fire employees and recommends advancement promotion or any other change of status of employees within their reporting line.
- Interviews and hires coordinators specialists supervisors and actors.
- Is involved in regular teaching observation with an emphasis on feedback to the actors and missionaries.
- Motivates and enriches the morale of actors.
- Resolves problems that arise from teachers training supervisors training coordinators and training managers.
- Meets weekly with direct reports for training and coordination purposes.
- Ensures proper budget assessment and authorization of pay including increases to training personnel.
Ensures effectiveness of training programs and curriculum (15%)
- Works closely with the Curriculum team and Research and Evaluation personnel and Training Manager 3s to ensure teaching experiences are meeting pre-determined quality standards.
- Is current on training methods and innovations through literature and membership in professional organizations.
- Has a high degree of involvement with training schedules and classroom scheduling to ensure effective training of missionaries.
- Where applicable has direct impact on second language acquisition.
Implements training programs for actors (10%)
- Manages selection according to established guidelines and policies.
- Conducts employee pre-service training.
- Conducts and monitors in-service training of actors.
Trains teachers and missionaries on utilizing scheduling software and orientations for teaching experiences (10%)
- Conducts weekly training meetings of training coordinator and actor supervisors.
- Conducts in-service training meetings with large groups of MTC staff.
- Attends regular Team Meeting.
- Participates in workshops and retreats scheduled by the Administration.
Keeps abreast of Linguistic information and data management (For Language Training groups) (5%)
- Reads and studies current linguistics literature (issued by TESOL ACTFL etc.).
- Maintains knowledge on MTC policies and procedures.
- Determines design and development of new software.
Oversees hiring projections based on number of missionaries for assigned teams (5%)
- Conducts needs analysis and program assessment through weekly interviews with training coordinator training supervisors and through statistical reports and measurements.
- Communicates and coordinates regularly with senior leadership regarding performance progress of missionaries.
QualificationsRequired:
- Bachelors degree in education communication linguistics business public management or related field.
- 5 years of experience in one of the above fields OR equivalent combination of both education and experience (part-time experience is to be counted 2 years part-time equals 1 year full-time).
- Active returned Church missionary.
- Experience in training teaching and supervision.
- Strong motivation to generate own ideas for training yet capable of adjusting to ecclesiastical and administrative direction.
- Interpersonal skills in dealing with Church leadership and organizations such as BYU. This includes the ability to develop successful working relationships with numerous people in a wide variety of settings.
- Broad understanding of Church-wide missionary training.
- Abreast of current management philosophies regarding program assessment budget design program and material implementation and needs analysis.
- Technical skills in spreadsheets project management tools assessment tools such as Qualtrics or Tableau.
- Ability to clearly articulate ideas and principles in a motivating and compelling manner.
- Experience observing performance identifying areas of potential improvement according to specified criteria and through appropriate feedback increasing desired outcomes.
- Collaborative communication.
- To successfully perform the essential functions of the job there may be physical requirements which need to be met such as sitting for long periods of time and using monitors/equipment.
Preferred:
- Masters degree or PhD in education communication linguistics management or other related field.
- Prior experience as a mission leader.
- Capability in language acquisition skills (For Language Training division only).
- Fluency in a second language (For Language Training division only).
