Job Description

The Pre-Admission Registered Nurse is responsible for

I. Responsibilities and Duties:

A. Provides total comprehensive care to patients by applying the nursing process in an organized and systematic manner according to the Centers policy in keeping with patient safety principles.

B. Reviews patient information prior to pre-op phone call using EMR computer system to obtain patient history.

C. Conducts a patient pre-op phone call before surgery.

D. Objectives of a phone interview are to:

  • Verify the correct spelling of the patients name and his/her date of birth.

  • Ask the patient to state and/or describe his/her procedure and surgeons name.

  • Obtain detailed patient medical/surgical history including allergies.

  • Acquire a list of all medications taken including dose and times.

  • Discuss physicians orders pertaining to preoperative laboratory tests studies or specialist consultation.

  • Complete Pre-Operative work lists / assessment questionnaires to assure patients are properly optimized prior to surgery.

  • Reinforce that the patient must have an adult > 18 YOA to drive him or her home.

  • Obtain the BEST phone number at which to contact the patient.

  • Answer any questions the patient may have about the scheduled procedure.

E. Prioritizes and organizes work assignment and adjusts priorities based on changing situations.

F. Works collaboratively with Dept of Anesthesia Surgeons office staff and other departments to assure patients medical records are complete prior to surgery.

G. Serves as a point of contact for patients regarding the peri operative process. Provides information as appropriate on instructions expectations and directions.

H. Promotes and maintains a safe clean and orderly environment.

II. Computer Systems

  • Demonstrates knowledge and the skill understanding and using the Centers computer system and EMR for documentation charging list reports and inventory. Participates in training classes as needed.

  • Maintains confidentiality of all information in the medical record and assigned computer codes.

III. Professionalism

A. Maintains current knowledge of ambulatory post anesthesia / peri-operative nursing practice.

B. Utilizes opportunities for professional growth by attending continuing education programs.

  • Attends seminars and meetings relevant to PACU / Ambulatory Surgery as requested by the Center.

  • Maintains and ensures dress code and decorum.

  • Promotes good image of Center to patients physicians vendors and community.

  • Demonstrates professional behavior by being technically competent skilled and responsive to the Centers customers in a compassionate efficient and effective manner.

  • Maintains competencies identified by the Center including but not limited to mandatory education equipment and skill competency review lists. Makes self-knowledgeable as to the contents of the Centers Policy and Procedure Manual.

C. Maintains confidentiality of all information and the medical record and assigned computer codes.

D. Actively communicates and supports the Organizations Mission Values Ethics Philosophy Objectives and Policies and Procedures. Demonstrates an understanding of how the success of the surgery center is linked to the success or failure of the customer process.

E. Demonstrates safe habits in the workplace with a concern for the safety of patients families and staff. Maintains current knowledge of the Centers Emergency Preparedness protocols and procedures. Applies OSHA standards. F. Provides a summary of pre / post-op instructions to patients

G. Identifies strategies to increase competency of team members.

IV: Qualifications

A. Valid and current New Jersey State Nursing License required.

B. Ability to communicate in English both orally and in writing.

C Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

D. Ability to perform diverse work assignments with time limitations with a high degree of accuracy.

E. Ability to use problem solving critical thinking and priority settings skills.

F. Maintains annual competencies; and

G. Functional knowledge of:

  • Standard Office Equipment (Phone Fax Copy Machine Scanner Email/Voice Mail); and

  • Standard Office Technology in a Window based environment/EMR system.

PER DIEM Rate: $55.00 / hour

Pay Range: $43.61 - $54.52 Hourly

The provided compensation range is based on industry standards and salary determinations will be made based on numerous factors including but not limited to years of experience and location of position.
