Job Description
BronxWorks helps individuals and families improve their economic and social well-being. From toddlers to seniors we feed shelter teach and support our neighbors to build a stronger all aspects of our work we strive for the highest ethical and performance standards and guided by the belief that people are to be treated with dignity and respect regardless of their present situation or past experiences. We have 62 locations throughout the borough providing a variety of programs that offer assistance in the areas of family children and youth support educational services elder care homelessness mental health and workforce development. The Living Room is the BronxWorks central location for its adult homeless services. BronxWorks operates three 24-hour programs that include a drop-in center a 50-bed safe haven for chronically street homeless adults and our borough wide mobile street outreach program. All of the programs provide direct services to street homeless individuals in the Bronx including case management food clothing emergency shelter referrals to NYC shelters and permanent housing placement.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Abide by Department of Health and OSHA regulations regarding kitchen hygiene and maintenance
- Assist with weighing in receiving and proper storage of food
- Participate in menu planning
- Prepare food under direction of head cook
- Assist with safe handling and proper temperature control of prepared foods
- Assist with proper functioning and cleaning of kitchen and kitchen equipment dining areas and adherence to sanitation standards
- Assist with packaging and delivery of meals to satellite offices
- Submit food orders
- Maintain food usage records and assist in taking monthly inventory
- Help coordinate activities of staff engaged in food preparation meal service and cleanup
- Attend relevant BronxWorks and outside training.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by manager.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent credentials preferred.
- Valid Safe Food Handlers Certificate or ability to obtain certificate within 3-6 months of employment.
- Some experience working in a setting responsible for managing and providing 3 meals based on required standards in a congregate setting is preferred.
- Proficiency in safe operation of all kitchen equipment and Department of Health Regulations.
- Strong oral and written communication time management and organizational skills are necessary.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to use a computer for prolonged periods.
- Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
- Ability to stand walk or sit for long periods of time.
- Ability to climb five flights of stairs if required to conduct home visits and/or fieldwork.
- Ability to bend and retrieve objects and/or documents.
- Ability to travel in the boroughs of New York City and its adjacent counties via public transportation.
- Ability to travel for a minimum of 1 mile within a reasonable amount of time and in all types of weather including inclement weather if required to conduct home visits and/or field work.
