Job Description:

Hitachi Rail is looking for an enthusiastic self-motivated Traction and auxiliary control Engineer who thrives in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate is comfortable performing a wide range of tasks from administrative to strategic. The position is based in Napoli Italy.

Accountabilities

• Requirements Analysis & System Design

  • Analyze input requirements to definecontrol architectureand detailed specifications.

  • Model and simulatepropulsion systemsandpower convertersto optimize component sizing and topology selection.
    

• Control Algorithms & Software Development

  • Design and developcontrol functions and algorithmsto meet technical specifications.

  • Develop and maintainembedded software and firmware libraries.

  • Implementharmonic emission controlstrategies to ensureEMI compliance.

  • Designdiagnostic algorithmsforCondition-Based Maintenance (CBM)in propulsion systems.
    

• Testing & Validation

  • DevelopHardware-in-the-Loop (HIL)andSoftware-in-the-Loop (SIL)test environments.

  • Conductcontrol system validationinSIL/HILand real-world integration testing.

  • Performsystem integration testsandon-board validation.

  • Supportcommissioning field testing and service operations.
    

• Compliance & Documentation

  • Ensuresoftware documentationcomplies withrailway standards(EN 50128 EN 50657).

  • Participate inDesign Reviews (DR)and supportroutine testingof control electronics and power converters.

Required Skills/ Knowledge

Control Systems & Signal Processing

• Advanced knowledge ofautomation control theoryandreal-time signal processing.

• Expertise invector control theory (FOC DTC)for electric machines.

• Dynamic system modeling and simulation usingSimulink/Simscape.

• Embedded & Real-Time Systems

• Proficient inC/C Python andLinuxfor embedded systems development.

• Experience withreal-time operating systems (RTOS)andEclipse-based toolchains.

• Firmware development:microcontroller register programmingperipheral drivers andinterfaces (UART SPI I2C PWM ADC).

• FPGA programmingusingVHDLfor high-speed control applications.

• Power Electronics & Electric Propulsion

• Strong understanding ofpower converter topologies(DC/DC AC/DC inverters).

• Knowledge ofelectric/hybrid propulsion systemsandelectric machine control (PMSM induction motors).

• Experience withHardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing(dSPACE Speedgoat OPAL-RT).

• Communication Protocols & Standards

• Hands-on experience withCAN Ethernet MVBbuses and protocols (J1939 TRDP TCN).

• Knowledge offunctional safety standards (EN50128 EN 50657 IEEE1558).

• Software & Systems Engineering

• Model-Based Design (MBD)for control systems usingSimulink/Stateflow.

• Requirements managementwithIBM Rational DOORS.

• Experience withautomated code generationfor embedded targets.

• Additional Competencies:

• Electric Machines:Deep understanding ofPMSM induction motors and BLDC control techniques.

• Testing & Validation:Familiarity withHIL/SIL/MILenvironments for system verification.

• Industrial Standards:Compliance withIEC 61508 ISO 26262 and automotive/railway safety norms.

Education & Qualifications

• DegreeinAutomation Electrical Electronic or Computer Engineering(Ph.D. preferred in Automation Engineering).

Languages

• Fluent in English(professional proficiency).
