Primary Purpose of Position:
The North Carolina Zoo is looking for a dynamic team and detail-oriented individual to join the Aquatics Team. This team is responsible for monitoring the water quality of animal areas and maintaining existing life support equipment. This position will work closely with most animal sections in order to maintain optimal aquatic life support systems.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Monitors quality of aquatic life support systems on a daily basis.
  • Provides preventative maintenance and repairs for life support systems.
  • Maintains working knowledge of water chiller systems filtration systems ozone systems and water chemistry.
  • Maintains safe and effective chemical laboratory activity.

Position / Physical Requirements:
  • Job offer is contingent upon passing a pre-employment screen conducted by assigned provider.
  • Must be able to regularly work weekends holidays and after normal work shifts.
  • Required to have a valid driver license or obtain within 60 days of employment to drive a state vehicle.
  • Position is considered Essential/Mandatory Staff and required to work on adverse weather days and during zoo emergencies.
  • Participation in the North Carolina Zoos occupational health program receiving vaccinations.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills and be able to effectively communicate both orally and in writing with Zoo staff and the public.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. have good physical agility strength vision and hearing and the ability to perform strenuous physical work in extremes of weather and challenging physical environments with or without an accommodation.
  • Must have demonstrated experience using computers and MS Office.
  • Must have the ability to troubleshoot complex water treatment and filtration systems.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Management Prefers:

  • Demonstrated experience working in a water quality laboratory setting.
  • Experience with aquarium water chillers heat exchangers UV and ozone systems reverse osmosis fractionators plumbing application pumps motors and/or filtration equipment
  • Demonstrated experience with water chemistry analysis techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience as a Water Quality Technician including sample gathering and testing quality control data interpretation data entry as well as aid in troubleshooting and correction of parameters.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma
and
two (2) years of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas;
or
an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I II III or Universal technician as required by Title 40 Code of Federal Regulations Part 82 Subpart F.
