The Gibela Engineering Research Chair sponsored by the Gibela Rail Transport Consortium is a multi-disciplinary engineering research group strategically positioned in the Faculty of Engineering at

Stellenbosch University (SU).

Its aim is to develop rail expertise by researching solving and implementing challenges within the rail industry. The group conducts research in the fields of electrical mechanical and industrial

engineering.

Die Gibela Navorsingstoel in Ingenieurswese geborg deur die Gibela Spoorvervoerkonsortium is n multidissiplinre ingenieursnavorsingsgroep wat strategies in die Fakulteit Ingenieurswese by die

Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) geposisioneer is.

Die doel daarvan om spoorwegkundigheid te ontwikkel deur uitdagings binne die spoorwegbedryf te ondersoek op te los en te implementeer. Die groep doen navorsing op die gebied van elektriese-

meganiese- en bedryfsingenieurswese.

Verder bied en administreer dit nagraadse beurse vir toepaslike spoorverwante navorsing. Meer inligting is beskikbaar by


Duties/Pligte

The appointed engineer will be expected to:
  • Assist and support the chair holder in the running of the chair.
  • Solve railway engineering problems by executing relevant research and development projects and thereby increase the rail body of knowledge in South Africa.
  • Contribute to the rail academic fraternity by disseminating knowledge gained from the research by means of seminars and conferences.
  • Publish high-quality research articles and reviews in international and local peer-reviewed academic journals conferences and other appropriate forms of research output.
  • Establish and build networks within the Faculty University locally and internationally.
  • Promote railway engineering studies in the broader academic community beyond the Faculty.
  • Promote and conduct community projects in order to stimulate young learners to pursue careers in engineering.
  • Based on the incumbents qualifications supervise and assess final year projects research theses and/or dissertations at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Support undergraduate and postgraduate students with their research projects and vacation work in the laboratory and on site.
  • Assist with the development of Gibela personnel and equip them with railway engineering skills.
  • Assist the Gibela bursary office by supporting bursary holders in terms of academic support and social adjustment.




Daar sal van die aangestelde ingenieur verwag word om:
  • Die leerstoelhouer by te staan en te ondersteun in die bestuur van die leerstoel.
  • Spoorwegingenieursprobleme op te los deur tersaaklike navorsings- en ontwikkelingsprojekte uit te voer en sodoende die spoorwegkennis in Suid-Afrika te vergroot.
  • By te dra tot die spoorweg-akademiese gemeenskap deur kennis wat uit die navorsing verkry word te versprei deur middel van seminare en konferensies.
  • Ho gehalte navorsingsartikels en -resensies in internasionale en plaaslike eweknie-gevalueerde akademiese tydskrifte konferensies en ander toepaslike vorme van navorsingsuitsette te
publiseer.
  • Netwerke binne die Fakulteit Universiteit plaaslik en internasionaal te vestig en te bou.
  • Spoorwegingenieurswese-studies in die brer akademiese gemeenskap buite die Fakulteit te bevorder.
  • Gemeenskapsprojekte te bevorder en uit te voer om jong leerders te stimuleer om loopbane in ingenieurswese te volg.
  • Gebaseer op kwalifikasies van die aangestelde persoon toesighouding en assessering van finalejaarprojekte navorsingstesisse en/of proefskrifte op voorgraadse en nagraadse vlak.
  • Voorgraadse en nagraadse studente te ondersteun met hul navorsingsprojekte en vakansiewerk in die laboratorium en op die perseel.
  • Te help met die ontwikkeling van Gibela-personeel en hulle toe te rus met spoorwegingenieursvaardighede.
  • Die Gibela beurskantoor te help deur beurshouers te ondersteun in terme van akademiese ondersteuning en sosiale aanpassing.

Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes

  • An appropriate in the fields of either Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer or compliance with the criteria for registration as Professional Engineer.




  • n Toepaslike in die vakgebiede van Elektriese Ingenieurswese of Meganiese Ingenieurswese.
  • Geregistreer as n Professionele Ingenieur of voldoen aan die kriteria vir registrasie as Professionele Ingenieur.

Recommendation/Aanbeveling

  • Experience in Rail Rolling Stock and Rail Engineering.
  • Proven experience in executing multidisciplinary projects.
  • Willingness and ability to enrol for an appropriate part-time technical postgraduate degree.
  • The ability and interest in field measurements and practical data analytics.




  • Ervaring in spoorvervoer en spoorwegingenieurswese.
  • Bewese ervaring in die uitvoer van multidissiplinre projekte.
  • Bereidwilligheid en vermo om in te skryf vir n toepaslike deeltydse tegniese nagraadse graad.
  • Die vermo en belangstelling in veldmetings en praktiese data-analise.
