The Police Dispatcher serves as the initial point of contact for those seeking police and emergency services for the University of Miami Coral Gables campus. The Police Dispatcher dispatches routine and emergency law enforcement services; coordinates emergency medical and fire services with local agencies; answers public inquiries about university events operations and locations; activates emergency messaging; monitors alarm systems and dispatches responders when necessary; monitors camera systems and video systems to identify suspicious activity and directs responders to investigate; and provides other general support to the law enforcement mission of the University of Miami Police Department. The Police Dispatcher performs work at demanding levels that includes multiple tasks under emergency conditions where speed and accuracy are significant factors in achieving the Departments mission. The Police Dispatcher position is designated as essential personnel and will continue to work during periods where the University may suspend normal operations due to events such as severe weather natural disasters special events and/or hazardous situations. The Police Dispatcher plays a vital role in maintaining a safe and secure campus environment. The position has significant responsibility for life and safety on the Coral Gables campus.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar related or a logical assignment for this classification.
Properly categorizes incoming calls for service.
Initiates proper response and/or routing of calls received at the Police Communications Center.
Operates telecommunications equipment to dispatch law enforcement firefighting and/or rescue crews and equipment. Continues to process information until responding units arrive on the scene.
Communicates information to vehicle and field personnel. Summons Coral Gables Police Department and Coral Gables Fire Department services upon request.
Conducts immediate record checks upon request.
Receives and screens routine calls for assistance or information from the public businesses and other government agencies. Answers general questions or refers calls to proper individual/agency.
Performs front desk receptionist duties when required.
Maintains and updates computerized and written records. Writes activity summaries compiles data and prepares reports. Operates computer and CAD systems.
Operates all communication systems and equipment to include specialized telecommunications equipment teletype National Warning System (NAWAS) and Security & Fire Alarm Systems.
Operates campus wide camera systems and video systems for real time monitoring and review of recorded information.
Activates Emergency Notification Network when necessary.
Performs other related tasks as required.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Products (especially Outlook Word Excel and Access).

Knowledge of the operation all communication systems and equipment to include radio telephone and office equipment.
Knowledge of Federal Communication Commission regulations and University policies and procedures and Coral Gables procedures pertaining to the dispatch of emergency equipment and personnel.
Knowledge of the geography of the University of Miami and surrounding area.
Knowledge of the organizational structure of first responders.
Knowledge of the usage of Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD).

Must be able to shift in a 24/7 work schedule as required.
Communicate effectively with staff internal and external customers and with a multigenerational workforce and community by using the Universitys Common Purpose DIRECCT Values and Service Standards in a Communications Center and law enforcement environment.
Operate a motor vehicle in normal conditions.
Physical Requirements
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of first responders radio systems telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see read talk sit stand hear hands to fingers dexterity handle feel or operate objects read and write fluently in English. Must have clear voice diction. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office equipment such as but not limited to specialized telecommunications equipment teletype NAWAS Warning System Security/Alarm System FCIC/NCIC/NLETS Systems and TDD deaf services equipment CAD System personal computer calculator copier and fax machine. Considerable amount of time spent sitting at a work station and taking calls and using a radio. Work is predominately performed indoors within a usually quiet to moderately noisy and fast-paced environment. Must be able to work different shifts as required. May occasionally be required to lift carry and/or push items weighing up to 20 lbs.
