Specialist Holiday Junction Trainmaster (PT/Seasonal)
Cincinnati Museum Center
Reports To: Manager - Trainmasters Holiday Junction
Department: Featured Exhibits
Status: Part-time/Seasonal (October January)
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Compensation: $16.00 /Hour
Position Overview:
Holiday Junction Trainmasters operate maintain and repair the various model train layouts located within the annual Holiday Junction experience including the Duke Energy Holiday Trains at Union Terminal. This position creates a fun and engaging environment by interpreting the different layouts and sharing their knowledge of the model trains and their history with guests. Trainmasters also work to care for the model train layouts through proper operating techniques and repairing locomotives rolling stock as well as electrical and mechanical components within the model trains and the layouts.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Engage with visitors by answering questions and highlighting areas of special interest.
- Operate and maintain model train controls to ensure train displays are running smoothly.
- Troubleshoot and repair electrical and mechanical components of steam and diesel locomotives as well as rolling stock.
- Assist in maintenance and care of model train layouts including repair of transformers track switches and operating accessories.
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Prior knowledge of operating and repairing model trains.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities:
- Basic electrical skills mechanical knowledge and model building skills are highly desired.
- Must have good communication and interpersonal skills and be willing to work with a diverse group of people.
- Demonstrate the ability to differentiate between different gauges and scales among the layouts and be able to communicate this knowledge to our visitors in an informative and engaging way.
- Ability to multitask prioritizing creative problem solving.
- Strong customer service skills with the ability to foster positive experiences for visitors.
Please be aware of the following scheduling requirements:
- The successful candidate must have a flexible schedule including:
- A minimum of 2-3 shifts per week; shifts are from 4-8 hours in duration
- Available at least one weekend day
- Peak periods of activity around Thanksgiving Christmas and New Years Day
Additional Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Must be able to stand or walk for long periods.
- Time is split between being on the exhibit floor operating model trains and engaging with guests and repairing model train components in a workshop setting.
- Some days the exhibit floor will be face-paced and may be mentally and physically demanding.
