Purpose
The Senior Investigator performs advanced investigative duties in support of the prosecutorial responsibilities of the District Attorneys Office. This role is integral to ensuring thorough and effective criminal investigations and may include supervisory responsibilities over other investigative staff.
Supervision Received and Exercised:
Works under the general supervision of an assigned supervisor.
May provide training and guidance to other investigators.
May supervise investigative or support personnel as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
Locate interview and prepare witnesses for trial.
Serve subpoenas and other legal process documents.
Execute search and arrest warrants as authorized.
Conduct surveillance and follow up on investigative leads.
Coordinate and liaise with other local state and federal law enforcement agencies.
Provide logistical support related to witnesses evidence handling and courtroom preparation.
Testify in court proceedings as needed.
Provide internal security within the District Attorneys Office.
Train and mentor other investigators.
Supervise staff as assigned.
Utilize the District Attorneys case management system and NCIC database (if certified).
Perform other related duties as required by the District Attorney.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is a mid-level classification in the Investigator job series requiring a high degree of independence judgment and investigative experience. The position may function as a team lead or supervisor for investigative staff.
Working Conditions:
Duties are performed in both office and field settings.
Requires physical stamina and the ability to work under potentially dangerous and high-pressure conditions.
Subject to being on-call outside of regular business hours including evenings weekends and holidays.
May involve exposure to sensitive or graphic materials during the course of investigations.
Required Qualifications:
Associates degree in criminology criminal justice police science or a related field plus 1 year work experience; or three (3) years work experience in related field plus New Mexico Peace Officer Certification within the first year of employement. Must also be able to pass the state required defensive driving course.
Preferred Qualifications:
New Mexico Peace Officer Certification plus four (4) years work experience education and/or training in law enforcement; investigations or related field.
