    POSITION TITLE: Director of School Nutrition
    DEPARTMENT: School Nutrition Department
    REPORTS TO: Chief Operating Officer
    FLSA STATUS: Exempt
    WORK SCHEDULE: 225 Days
    DATE REVIEWED: 3/2023

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

    Employment shall be at the will of the Board of Education. The Board of Education upon the recommendation of the Superintendent shall appoint the Director of School Nutrition. The annual period of service for the Director of School Nutrition shall be 225 days. The annual period of service for the Director of School Nutrition shall be twelve months.


    PRIMARY FUNCTION:

    Provides leadership and coordination for planning and supervision; oversees and implements the School Nutrition Program; ensures compliance with all Federal and State laws State Department of Education rules and regulations and City Schools of Decatur policies.


    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.

    Compliance

    • Communicates collaborates and cooperates with colleagues supervisors and students

    • Establishes and implements standards and policies for school nutrition services in accordance with local state and federal requirements.

    • Interprets program goals needs regulations management data and program requirements to system-level administrators principals school nutrition staff and school communities.

    • Knows laws regulations trends and market conditions that affect school nutrition programs.

    • Plans menus that meet federal meal pattern requirements for breakfast and lunch for all age students

    Financial

    • Prepares yearly budget and evaluates expenditures/revenues reports to determine financial status and financial needs of the program

    • Prepares monthly financial reports and evaluates expenditures/revenues to determine the financial status and financial impacts of the program

    • Manages funds and maintains records in accordance with regulations of City Schools of Decatur Board of Education and Georgia Department of Education

    • Monitors and assists in preparing all reports required for audit and submission for federal and state funding.

    • Coordinates meal accountability procedures including monitoring to ensure that each schools free and reduced records are maintained orderly and accurately.

    • Prepare monitor and oversee contracts for bid items as set forth in bid documents and terminates contracts if necessary.

    Management

    • Projects usage for USDA-donated foods submits the request to the Georgia Department of Education and supervises the use of USDA-donated foods in the schools.

    • Monitors program management at the school and system levels to ensure that all regulatory functions are met and to improve the delivery of services to students and staff.

    • Makes recommendations for program improvement through yearly administrative reviews and completion of school visitation forms as needed

    • Continually gathers data from students staff and parents to be used to improve the food service program.

    • Evaluates/recommends computer software/hardware as needed to carry out the basic functions of school nutrition services to improve record keeping and improve efficiency.

    • Coordinates food service for special events and maintains appropriate record-keeping as required by audit procedures

    Leadership

    • Supervises the school nutrition staff

    • Recruits select and places school nutrition personnel

    • Observes operations on a regular basis to make recommendations for meeting minimum standards

    • Evaluates school nutrition staff yearly on the appropriate form or as needed and develop employee improvement plans as needed

    • Recommends termination for any employee after due process is followed and minimum work habits not met

    • Conducts monthly manager and finishing kitchen supervisor meetings to keep the program on track and provide needed info/training to staff

    • Develops and implements staffing formula to meet minimum productivity standards of the Georgia Department of Education

    • Assists in recommended needed updates/changes to school nutrition salary scales

    • Serves on system-wide committees as requested/needed (staff development facility retirement etc.)

    • Participates in the monthly board of education meetings regarding school nutrition services progress.

    • Tracks employees (minimum of 12 hours/school year) based on assessed needs as in school nutrition services yearly staff development plan and provides training courses (30-hour training in depth) as requested by the Georgia Department of Education for specific school nutrition positions.

    Professional Development

    • Represents the school system on appropriate state committees

    • Attends GDOE school nutrition directors meetings

    • Attends conferences sponsored by GDOE and GSFSA to stay current on priority issues affecting the school nutrition program

    • Reads professional journals to stay abreast of current issues

    • Participates in appropriate job-related professional organizations

    • Represents the school system on appropriate state committees


    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Supervises nutrition staff.

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
    Masters degree in nutrition or related area and valid school nutrition director certificate. Public School food service experience preferred. Prior school nutrition management and financial experience are preferred.


    EVALUATION:

    The performance of this job shall be evaluated annually per provisions of the boards policy on evaluating classified personnel.
