Description

The Criminal Branch is responsible for the processing of misdemeanor cases filed throughout the City of Los Angeles.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Witness Service Coordinator is responsible for assisting attorneys with witness contact on all continuing misdemeanor cases and for case processing duties as needed. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Contacting civilian witnesses regarding their court appearances;
  • Explaining court procedures and providing court escort services for victims and witnesses;
  • Responding to telephone inquiries from subpoenaed witnesses and fostering cooperative attitudes; Reviewing case files and utilizing investigative techniques to locate necessary witnesses when insufficient or inaccurate information is contained in case documents;
  • Collecting subpoenas and checking the witnesses on the Deputy City Attorneys court calendar;
  • Paging missing witnesses;
  • Tracing data to determine the status of any case that does not appear on the daily calendar;
  • Working with the courts to assist victims and witnesses in obtaining court fees and arranging travel for witnesses and victims;
  • Resolving miscellaneous problems which develop with witnesses;
  • Preparing restitution letters;
  • Assisting with the preparation and compilation of criminal complaints;
  • Updating case information in the Offices criminal case management system;
  • Accessing booking and criminal information via NECS (Network Communication System) TCIS (Trial Courts Information System) and CCHRS (Consolidated Criminal History Reporting System)
  • Operate vehicle as needed to provide support at court proceedings or any of the Criminal Branch Offices located throughout Los Angeles County; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

The Witness Service Coordinator must be flexible and prepared to adapt to changing situations as necessary and have the ability to work effectively with the public. The position requires initiative attention to detail and the ability to work under pressure of time deadlines.


Applicants must be proficient in the operation of personal computer equipment.


Reliable attendance and punctuality are also required.


The hours for this position are generally 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday subject to operational needs.


A valid California Drivers License is required.


Desired Qualifications

Knowledge of the criminal case management systems Network Expanded Communications System (NECS) and the Trial Court Information System (TCIS). Bilingual English and Spanish is preferred.

Current Location

This position is subject to assignment at any Criminal Branch office or location within the County of Los Angeles.

Probation

For external applicants Appointment to this exempt position (non-Civil Service) will be subject to a one-year probationary period as required by Section 1050 of the City Charter. Successful completion of the one-year probationary period will result in tenure with the office.
