Duties and Responsibilities (*denotes essential functions):

  • *Serve as the Head of Digital Preservation and oversee the digitization and digital preservation activities of Uluulu: The Henry Kuualoha Giugni Moving Image Archive of Hawaii.
  • *Oversee the daily operations of the digital video preservation lab including management and maintenance of digitizing computer workstations analog video and digital video equipment racks and signal flow.
  • *Develop and implement digital preservation strategy digitization procedures and workflows according to the archival industry best practices.
  • *Directly supervise Media Specialist staff to ensure all work is in accordance with Uluulus digital preservation policies and procedures.
  • *Provide oversight and management of Uluulus digital preservation server cloud-based file storage local hard drives and LTO data backup.
  • *Ensure long term digital preservation master file integrity through regular system file checks and ongoing communication with UHWO IT UHITS and digital storage service providers.
  • *Create and implement standard digitizing procedures according to the archival industry best practices and train appropriate staff in the use of specialized software hardware media files and analog equipment.
  • *Ensure target file technical specifications are met by digitization vendors and service providers by performing quality control checks.
  • *Develop digital preservation projects for the archives internship and volunteer programs and train and supervise interns and practicum students.
  • *Perform cleaning and digitization of archival videotape collection material using specialized software and hardware systems.
  • *Assign technical and descriptive metadata to digital collection materials using the media asset management system.
  • *Edit digital video content and design in-house graphics using specialized multimedia software programs to generate website clips and original programs.
  • Compile monthly and annual statistics analyze results and run reports related to digitization digital preservation file management website visits and user traffic.
  • Attend and present at national professional archival conferences and workshops about archival digitization and preservation in order to keep abreast of industry standards and their application to Uluulu.
  • Assist with processing environmental monitoring cataloging reference captioning and transcription and administrative duties as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Arts and Sciences or related field with major coursework related to creative media and/or film and four (4) years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for digital preservation archival video digitization video production or post-video production; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education knowledge skills and abilities as indicated.
  2. Considerable working knowledge of principles practices and techniques in the area of moving image archiving and digital preservation as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts principles and methodologies.
  3. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws rules regulations and theories and systems associated with film and video production and post-production process and materials associated with a production.
  4. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective innovative and timely manner.
  5. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations groups team leaders and members and individuals.
  7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
  8. For supervisor work demonstrated ability to lead subordinates manage work priorities and projects and manage employee relations.


Supplemental Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Experience handling and digitizing videotape formats in a wide variety of obsolete playback systems (e.g. 3/4 Umatic Betacam SP Digital Betacam).
  2. Proficiency in video digitizing systems and equipment (e.g. AJA Io time-based correctors waveform/vectorscopes audio mixers).
  3. Proficiency in video editing and transcoding software (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite Final Cut Pro DVD Studio Pro).
  4. Experience with file management fixity and cloud storage systems and software (e.g. Amazon AWS S3 MediaInfo Nara File Analyzer)
  5. Experience with Recollect media asset management software or other similar content management system.
  6. Knowledge of various film formats (e.g. 8mm Super8 16mm 35mm)
  7. Knowledge of Hawaiian media history culture and language.
  8. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  9. Evidence of strong critical thinking skills.
  10. Experience in a collaborative and collegial setting.
  11. Productive attitude and enthusiasm for an innovative and changing environment.


Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Professional work experience in an academic library or archives setting.
  2. Professional training or certification in digital preservation collections care restoration and remastering.
  3. Experience with Climate Notebook or other environmental analysis software.
  4. Experience with Augusta ADA Aegisub or other voice-to-text and captioning software.
  5. Ability to lift 20-30 pound boxes.
