Were looking for adeputy digital editorto support the head of digital (live) with day-to-day oversight of all of the Guardians digital content.

Youll play a crucial role in ensuring our digital presence is dynamic engaging and globally responsive. Supporting the head of digital (live) youll help oversee the flow of content across multiple platforms ensuring breaking stories and live coverage are delivered with speed accuracy and creativity.

In addition youll deputise for the head of digital (live) and in their absence manage the team of homepage editors.

This is a permanent NUJ role 9-day fortnight (including weekend working some Saturdays and Sundays).

About the role

  • Assist with running the days digital outputworking closely with desk editors and the digital editing team to respond in creative and imaginative ways to stories throughout the day
  • Manage the UK Europe US and International homepages on a day-to-day basis.
  • Work with colleagues in the US and Australia to help meet our global audience needs.
  • Send breaking news alerts and oversee live blogs.
  • Work with design visuals video community and audience teams to ensure the best possible expression of the Guardians digital output.
  • Work with planning teams and different desks to schedule content and to ensure meticulous preparation for live events.
  • Attend planning and ideas meetings to ensure the Guardians digital needs are reflected in commissioning decisions.
  • Attend meetings and work with colleagues in digital development to agree and shape plans to develop the Guardians digital storytelling.

About you

  • Significant experience of a live newsroom ideally at a national or international news organisation
  • Strong understanding of digital tools
  • Experience of editing homepages and articles
  • Understanding and knowledge or analytics search and other measurements of digital audience and targets
  • Strong record of creativity and innovation in digital journalism
  • Good knowledge of social media
  • Clear vision of the purpose and aims of the Guardian
  • Ideally you will have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to the role
