Job Summary

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Neurology is seeking a Clinical/Technical Specialist to support the Benton Neuropsychology Clinic. Under the supervision of a staff neuropsychologist this position will administer neuropsychological tests on patients as well as organize and score test results and prepare summaries of test results. Other responsibilities include managing data transfer and maintaining patient electronic health records.

Duties to Include:
  • Assists with assessment of patients using clinical neuropsychological tests of cognition and behavior.
  • Assists with acquisition and organization of data regarding the cognitive and behavioral function of brain-injured persons.
  • Provides a specialized level of clinical/technical service for patients with other team members.
  • Maintains and updates equipment and supplies used in providing specialty care or services.
  • Communicates detailed patient information with other members of our team.
  • Uses strong interpersonal skills to interact with patients and provide a comfortable testing environment.
  • Collaborates with others on the health care team related to clinical/technical specification to assure safe and effective delivery of care.
  • Follows applies policies and performs documentation requirements.
  • Reports variances and works to address them.

  • Provides training to new clinical staff practicum students and incoming post-doctoral fellows working and training in our clinic.
  • Models standardized Neuropsychological exams when residents graduate students and other people observe our clinic.
  • Administers and scores neuropsychological tests under the supervision of staff neuropsychologists. Prepares summaries of test results.
  • Performs coding and transfer of information into computerized database.

  • Manages and scan in all clinic files into database.
  • Organizes patient charts maintains patient log collects and summarizes test results and maintains patient data files using standard psychological protocols and procedures.
  • Determines appropriate billing level and processes patient charges.
  • Maintains inventory of neuropsychological test forms booklets and other supplies; orders supplies as needed or requested; restocks examination rooms on a regular basis.
  • Assists with research projects when available and as needed by providers graduate students and special requests.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Neuroscience degree preferred.
  • Ability to apply knowledge in relationships with brain-injured persons
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Proficiency in computer software applications (e.g. Microsoft Office etc.)
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with neuropsychological and neurological data.
  • Previous experience working with elderly medical patients.
  • Some knowledge of the University of Iowa policies procedures and regulations.
  • Bilingual in Spanish or proficient in speaking reading and writing in Spanish.
