JOB TITLE:

Assistant Professor - Specialized in Biomechanics

JOB PURPOSE:

The Division of Kinesiology and Health in the College of Health Sciences at the University of Wyoming is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor specialized in Biomechanics(9-month full time) beginning in August 2026.

We welcome candidates with research expertise within and related to biomechanics that can create synergies with our existing specializations in athletic injury rehabilitation science and perceptual-motor control and learning and/or promote overarching application/translation to health sciences. Desired areas of expertise may include but are not limited to biomechanics neuromotor control innovative technology (e.g. wearables robotic exoskeleton virtual reality AI/machine learning) in kinesiology/health sensorimotor rehabilitation physical disabilities/movement disorders injury prevention/sports medicine as well as aging and rehabilitation of chronic diseases in the above areas. For applicants whose research includes computational modeling simulation or data-driven analysis in kinesiology a joint appointment with the University of Wyomings School of Computing may be available (optional). This opportunity supports interdisciplinary collaboration in the emerging area of computational kinesiology and provides access to additional resources and expertise in computing and data science.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop an active and independent research program in biomechanics or closely related field leading to peer-reviewed publications in the scientific community and national/international presentations.
  • Pursue and secure funding to sustain the research program and support student researchers/trainees.
  • Provide quality instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels in biomechanics or related areas within the candidates trained expertise.
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate (masters or doctoral) students.
  • Provide service to the division college university community state and the greater professional society.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Earned doctorate by August 2026 inbiomechanics movement sciences/kinesiology physical therapy athletic training biomedical sciences rehabilitation sciences or closely related field.
  • Ability and/or experience teaching university-level courses.
  • Established and/or developing line(s) of research that will result in publications in peer-reviewed journals and external funding.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Commensurate with career stage evidence of the following:

  • Postdoctoral training and/or post-graduate clinical experience in biomechanics or closely related field(s).
  • Experience directing or managing a biomechanics research laboratory.
  • Teaching effectiveness in undergraduate and/or graduate courses related to biomechanics that complements or extends existing curriculum within the division.
  • Success in obtaining extramural research fellowships or grants.
  • Established record of peer-reviewed publications in reputable journals.
  • Working effectively as a member of collaborative and/or interdisciplinary teams.
  • Research agenda that can leverage University initiatives and existing faculty expertise and has potential to improve the health and wellbeing of Wyoming and the region.
  • Working with diverse populations in research academic or private sector settings.
  • Advising and mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students.
  • Strong oral and written communication in academic settings.
  • Specific interest in the place and/or position.
  • Research addresses movement-related health challenges across the lifespan and is applicable to a broad spectrum of the population including those in rural underserved or economically disadvantaged settings.

About the Division of Kinesiology and Health

The Division of Kinesiology and Health (DKH) is one of seven academic units administratively housed in the College of Health Sciences at the University of Wyoming. DKH currently has 12 full-time tenure-track faculty members and seven lecturers. Faculty has consistently maintained research grant and contract support from diverse agencies including NIH NSF USDA U.S. Department of Education WY Departments of Education and Health the American Heart Association and industry partners. Two majors are offered at the undergraduate level leading to the B.S. degree one in Kinesiology and Health Promotion and one in Physical Education Teacher Education. At the graduate level the M.S. degree (thesis and non-thesis) is offered with emphasis in Exercise and Sports SciencePhysical Education Teacher Education and Health Promotion and addition DKH is participating in the university-wide interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. program to recruit and train doctoral students. The DKH is actively involved in research funded by two programs: (a) Wyoming Sensory Biology Center (WSBC) a phase I center of biomedical research excellence program (COBRE) and (b) the Wyoming INBRE a phase 4 National Institutes for Health (NIH) IDeA Networks for Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) Program. Looking ahead DKH plans to launch its own Ph.D. program in Health Sciences with a concentration in Kinesiology in 2026. Research efforts are further bolstered by resources from the newly established School of Computing at UW as well as the Wyoming NASA Space Grant Consortium.

The University of Wyomings School of Computing (SoC) established in 2022 serves as an interdisciplinary hub for integrating computational tools skills and approaches across academic disciplines. With a vision of Digital for All the SoC empowers students and researchers to address real-world challenges through computing innovations such as data science artificial intelligence simulation modeling and digital mapping. The School supports over a dozen specialized computing credentials and hosts two interdisciplinary research centers: the Data Science Center and Wyoming Geographic Information Science Center (WyGISC).
