Other Conditions: To support Professor Lilikala Kameeleihiwa of Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies in the Moopono: Genealogy and Ancestral Restoration Project of 9000 Pages of Handwritten Hawaiian Genealogy from Hawaii State Archives. Dr. Kameeleihiwa is a professor in the Hawaiinuiakea School of Hawaiian Knowledge. This GRA position is temporary at .50 FTE. Renewal contingent on performance and availability of funds.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Under the general supervision of Professor LilikalaKameeleihiwaPrincipal Investigator for theMoopono: Genealogy and Ancestral Restoration Project of 9000 Pagesof 9000 Pagesto:
  2. Transcribe handwritten genealogy from the 9000 pages of the HSA Hawaiian Genealogy collection;
  3. Edit and footnote Moopono Typescripts:
  4. Oversee undergraduate students in transcribing editing and footnoting Moopono Typescripts:
  5. Manage theMoopono 9000 Pages shared google drive folder;
  6. Make video recordings ofMoopono meetings;
  7. Transcribe video presentations;
  8. Edit video presentations;
  9. Facilitate meetings;
  10. Be willing to share Genealogy research with the general Hawaiian public;
  11. Create video trainings on how to research genealogy online for the general public;
  12. Help translate Hawaiian Genealogy transriptions into English;
  13. Conduct research in the areas of Cosmogonic Genealogies historical Alii genealogiesand Hawaiian language source materials;
  14. Collect and analyze data;
  15. Conduct literature reviews;
  16. Develop presentations and lectures
  17. Attend workshops and lectures; and
  18. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Admitted full-time at the University of Hawaii in a graduate degree program at the time of hire with good standing.
  2. Bachelors degree in Hawaiian Studies Hawaiian LanguageLibrary Studiesor related field.
  3. Able to read cursive writing and transcribe into type scripts;
  4. Experience in researching Hawaiian Cosmogonic Genealogieshistorical Alii Nui and Kaukaualii;
  5. Ability to read and write in the Hawaiian Language;
  6. Ability to translate from Hawaiian to English;
  7. Ability to conduct literature reviews analyze and synthesize information in Hawaiian and in English; and
  8. Excellent writing and research skills.

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Experience in formatting materials for posting on the web;
  2. Experience in managing websites;
  3. Experience in making training videos for researching genealogy;
  4. Experience in video recording and editing;
  5. Experience in transcription;
  6. Experience in archival research;
  7. Experience in translation of Hawaiian chants and mele;
  8. Fluency in the Hawaiian Language;
  9. Ability to work independently and/or to supervise others;
  10. Experience in taking the HWST 341: Hawaiian Genealogy and HWST 342: Chiefs of the Hawaiian Kingdom classes and earning excellent grades;
  11. Demonstrated knowledge of Hawaiian Cosmogonic Genealogiesand Hawaiian History
  12. Publication of articles in the field ofHawaiianStudies;
  13. Excellent writing analyticalcomputerand oral communication skills; and
  14. Knowledge of Hawaiian communities and values.
