JOB PURPOSE: The AVP of Communications serves as a member of the Colleges senior communications team. They will create and implement data-informed strategies to promote the institutions achievements distinctions and leadership across owned media as well as to local regional national and international news media; play a collaborative role in crisis and issues management and acts as college spokesperson; direct emergency management communications; manage internal campus communications; oversee creation and distribution of digital content of news and events including material for college-level social media channels.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Reporting directly to the Chief Communications Officer the AVP Communications performs the following essential duties and responsibilities:
The AVP manages the news team responsible for web content media relations and has a dotted line overseeing social media content. The AVP leads a team in developing coordinating and implementing communication initiatives that promote the Colleges reputation regionally nationally and internationally to a wide range of audiences.
The AVP also will help guide internal and executive communication plans and products as well as serving as a key spokesperson for the college for media and public Must be able to quick adjust priorities and respond to immediate needs.
Partners with Chief Communications Officer on crisis response including on strategy messaging and response.
Manages the editor of the Pomona College Alumni Magazine - ensuring alignment of editorial strategy with College objectives and goals as well as audience interests.
Significant responsibilities include advancing op-eds traditional media outreach such as releases pitches appearances and advisories social media for news and thought-leadership and media events. Planning for promotions of key events ranging from public speakers to orientation and commencement and overseeing social media planning and proactive media placement plans are included in the responsibilities.
The AVP works with communications managers in admissions advancement and other key departments to coordinate efforts maximize efficiencies and advance key initiatives for the college. This person also serves as a key liaison with colleagues at the other Claremont Colleges.
Lead and supervise the Communications department staff in editorial and media relations partners with Chief Communications Officer on emergency communications to achieve overall success for the College including collaborative planning and development of media social media and video strategies promoting the Colleges interests web strategies for planned site developments and effective publications.
Provide clear direction and oversight of related department activities in order to develop and achieve annual goals including assisting with budgeting planning and staff development. Responsible for monitoring and evaluating direct reports. Maintain an efficient collegial and proactive work environment in the Communications Office.
Drive the Colleges content strategy development as part of a team to ensure a balance of content that addressed the core strategic aims of the College. Must stay up to date on effective use of video social media and other elements of an integrated communications strategy. Identify develop and implement measurable communication initiatives that promote the Colleges reputation regionally nationally and internationally to a wide range of audiences both internal and external.
Identify develop implement and assess a wide variety of strategic communication initiatives including news and public relations activities media relations social media engagement Web and other digital communications various internal communications in order to tell the Colleges story to internal and external audiences. Devise strategic direction in consult with CCO for editorial content and also with appropriate members of the Communications staff and key campus members.
Ensure that the communications strategy evolves as emerging and new media continue to change.
Support CCO as needed in in government relations and executive communications including speeches/remarks for the college.
Lead the team to develop cultivate and maintain relationships with communicators across various news channels (traditional media social media etc). Connect those media contacts to those who serve as College sources.
Train motivate and encourage team members and freelancers in telling the Colleges story developing new skills and discovering new ways to meet communications objectives.
Evaluate the success of the Colleges communications efforts using quantitative and qualitative methods to determine the effectiveness of those efforts better inform decision-making and ensure that resources are allocated to deliver the greatest impact. Improve communication objectives by strategically introducing new technologies tools and styles to advance interaction with target audiences.
Work cross-functionally and pro-actively with diverse internal audiences on an ongoing basis. Especially as related to College wide aspirations for diversity and inclusivity.
Assure the application of consistent and relevant message and position across external and internal communications.
Contribute to other programs and College projects as requested. Perform other duties as assigned.
Serve as a spokesperson and lead point person on media interactions that help promote and/or impact the Colleges image.
Responsible for prioritizing media opportunities and preparing talking points speeches presentations and other supporting material as needed.
Actively engage cultivate and manage press relationships to ensure coverage.
Stay current on issues and events affecting higher education institutions and Pomona College incorporating this knowledge and understanding into the divisions planning success.
Coordinate special projects and provide assistance as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelors degree in the areas of communications marketing journalism or related field is required.
Experience: Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in communications with at least 5 years in a leadership capacity.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL SKILLS: The AVP Communications must possess the knowledge skills and abilities to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position or be able to demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed with or without reasonable accommodation using other skills and abilities not listed below.
An intellectually curious lifelong learner and relationship-building leader with expertise in integrated communications. Preferably experienced in higher education ideally within liberal arts with an appreciation for the colleges mission culture and history.
Deep strategic planning editorial crisis and media relations experience.
Proven experience shaping institutional reputation through integrated communications strategies.
Exceptional storytelling writing and editorial skills including the ability to translate complex ideas into accessible narratives.
Experience with executive communications media strategy and digital content.
A deep understanding and interest of the liberal arts mission and values.
Demonstrated success managing teams and building collaborative partnerships.
Commitment to diversity equity and inclusion in communication strategies and team culture.
ADDITIONAL POSITION DETAILS:
The rate for this role is between $170000 - $180000 with a competitive benefits package. The specific factors that the College will consider when offering a salary to an individual will include but not be limited to: education training relevant prior experience and performance in prior roles. All staff positions are ineligible for visa or permanent resident card sponsorship. As a California employer Pomona College requires all employees to be residents of California.
REQUIRED HOURS: The regular hours for this full time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday Friday. Weekend and evening work hours may be required. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or division.
