SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION:

This is a grant-funded position provided through a Federal Department of Justice (DOJ) grant. This position is an integral part of monitoring and supporting students and identifying students through analysis of risk factors for recommendation to internal and external initiatives support services and programs and works cooperatively to follow up on areas of concern reduce risk and harm and promote student success. The Student Engagement Specialist is responsible for supporting students who may benefit from additional academic social or emotional support in order to strengthen student achievement and engagement. This position collaborates with teachers counselors and families to build student success plans provide targeted interventions and connect students and their families with school- and community-based resources.

The Student Engagement Specialist will work with students and their families in the Eagle County School District to improve their engagement and their success in school and life and prevent involvement with the juvenile justice system. Primary focus is direct service with students in the 8th and 9th grade and their families. These students may be but not limited to being; impacted by violence habitually truant expelled or at risk of being expelled on probation or diversion unaccompanied minors at risk of dropping out or failing in foster care and/or experiencing oppressive hardships. This position prefers a person that is bilingual and biliterate in English and Spanish. The Student Engagement Specialist coordinates services and serves as a primary liaison between the schools community-based organizations and resources juvenile justice and human services agencies to provide the best support possible for the identified students and their families.

SUPERVISED BY: District Prevention Coordinators

ESSENTIAL JOB ELEMENTS:

  • Collaborate with school staff to identify students and families who may benefit from additional support based on attendance academic performance and behavioral indicators
  • Collaborate and build strong relationships with the referred families and students to facilitate a stronger community-family-school partnership approach to student successful outcomes
  • Work with the MTSS teams School Based Clinicians District Prevention Coordinator and School Counselors to support the most vulnerable students in the district
  • Conduct regular check-ins with identified students and families
  • Conduct student and family screenings to develop/coordinate effective prevention and intervention programming for at risk students and their families
  • Coordinates services and referrals and serves as a primary liaison between the schools community-based organizations and resources juvenile justice and human services agencies
  • Coordinate plan and provide logistical support for the Student/Family meetings as part of a community-family-school partnership
  • Review district databases for accuracy
  • Assist with grants
  • Effectively communicate with teachers and parents of students via phone or email to complete forms and applications.
  • Maintain detailed records of student progress and interventions using designated school systems including but not limited to records that deal with matters of a highly confidential nature- follow FERPA and HIPAA regulations
  • Collect and report data and evaluation information the Student Support Services Department and grants (when applicable) program objectives and accountability
  • Gather and provide evidence of adequate yearly progress on goals and requirements including but not limited to attendance level progression Intervention Plans growth plans student surveys academic and behavior monitoring grant outcomes GED expulsion and additional at-risk programming outcome data as assigned; maintain records to efficiently report biannually for grant
  • Coordinate with district and local resources to maintain and support programming.
  • Work with the district and school staff on restorative practices
  • Collaborate with Mountain Youth and YP365; create care plans for students and families who participate in Mountain Youths tiered evidence-based intervention programs and YouthPower365 programming
  • Monitor and maintain records of student and family engagement and progress in care plan services and prevention/intervention programming; aim to reduce barriers and increase protective factors to promote successful outcomes
  • Participate in professional learning opportunities to stay informed about best practices in supporting student success.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A bachelors degree or higher in social work criminal justice education or a related field is preferred
  • Conversational level or higher proficiency in Spanish is required
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills in English and Spanish
  • Youth Mental Health knowledge required
    • Social work background or comparable experience is preferred
    • Must be recommended by their supervisor
  • Effective organizational time management and problem-solving skills.
  • Computer skills: software management applications and on the Google Platform (Google docs sheets forms etc.)
  • Successful experience working with vulnerable and under-resourced youth and their families
  • Successful experience working with confidential information
  • Must be able to pass a background check that shows candidate is suitable to interact with minors which can be determined by searches in pertinent and reasonably accessible federal state and (if applicable) local sex offender and child abuse registries criminal history registries and fingerprint searches.
