The Department of Earth Sciences is a small research-intensive unit within the Faculty of Science at Stellenbosch University (SU). We consist of 11 academic staff four administrative and support staff

and around ten postdoctoral fellows. We offer a comprehensive undergraduate programme and a postgraduate research programme with approximately 150 to 200 undergraduate and postgraduate

students enrolled at any given time.

Our research is highly collaborative involving partners at Stellenbosch University other South African and international universities and industry stakeholders.

Our graduates typically find successful employment in the national or international minerals and environmental sectors.

Die Departement Aardwetenskappe is n klein navorsingsintensiewe eenheid binne die Fakulteit Natuurwetenskappe by die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US). Ons personeel bestaan uit elf akademiese

vier administratiewe en ondersteuningspersoneel en ongeveer tien nadoktorale genote. Ons bied n omvattende voorgraadse program en n nagraadse navorsingsprogram aan en het ongeveer 150 tot 200 ingeskrewe voorgraadse en nagraadse studente.

Ons navorsing sluit noue samewerking met vennote by die Universiteit Stellenbosch ander Suid-Afrikaanse en internasionale universiteite en met belanghebbendes in die bedryf in.

Ons graduandi werk in die nasionale en internasionale mineraal- en omgewingsektore.

Duties/Pligte


  • Supporting and assisting the senior technical officer.
  • Assisting the senior technical officer in managing the departmental laboratories and storerooms which includes equipment geological and chemical inventories gas supply and waste disposal.
  • Assisting the senior technical officer in providing technical support to academic staff and postgraduate students.
  • Assisting the senior technical officer in coordinating Occupational Health and Safety measures within the Department and addressing risks.
  • Assisting the senior technical officer in coordinating and managing the asset register and the needs of the Department.
  • Assisting with the preparation of undergraduate practicals and the housekeeping (cleaning and basic maintenance) of departmental laboratories and storerooms.
  • Assisting the senior technical officer in maintaining laboratory equipment.
  • Assisting with building and lecture room monitoring opening and closing.
  • Performing routine safety inspections and replacing consumables for students in the laboratories.
  • Assisting the senior technical officer with the monitoring of outsourced cleaning services.
  • Assisting with the delivery and collection of documents equipment and materials as required.
  • Assisting the senior technical officer and departmental administrators with ad hoc administrative work.

  • Verleen hulp aan die senior tegniese beampte om die bateregister en behoeftes van die Departement te kordineer en te bestuur.
  • Hulpverlening met die voorbereiding van voorgraadse praktika en die opruim en skoonmaak/basiese instandhouding van die departementele laboratoriums en stoorkamers.
  • Verleen hulp aan die senior tegniese beampte met die instandhouding van laboratoriumtoerusting.
  • Hulpverlening met die monitering van geboue en lesingsale en die oop- en toesluit daarvan.
  • Bied ad hoc-tegniese ondersteuning aan akademiese personeel en nagraadse studente in die Departement.
  • Doen roetine-veiligheidsinspeksies en vervang verbruikbare materiaal vir studente in die laboratoriums.
  • Verleen hulp aan die senior tegniese beampte met die monitering van uitgekontrakteerde skoonmaakdienste.
  • Hulpverlening met die aflewering en afhaal van dokumente toerusting en materiaal soos nodig.
  • Verleen hulp aan die senior tegniese beampte en departementele administrateurs met ad hoc-administratiewe take.

Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes

  • Matric certificate (or equivalent qualification) is essential or three years in-service training and relevant experience may be recognised through RPL.
  • At least two years practical work experience gained within a comparable laboratory environment.
  • Good communication skills in English as well as interpersonal skills.
  • Proven experience in general housekeeping maintenance and cleaning of facilities and equipment.

  • Matrieksertifikaat (of gelykwaardige kwalifikasie) is noodsaaklik of drie jaar se indiensopleiding en toepaslike ervaring kan deur EVL erken word.
  • Minstens twee jaar se praktiese werkservaring opgedoen in n soortgelyke laboratoriumomgewing.
  • Goeie kommunikasievaardighede in Engels asook interpersoonlike vaardighede.
  • Bewese ervaring in algemene huishouding skoonmaak en instandhouding van fasiliteite en toerusting.

Recommendation/Aanbeveling

  • Proven experience in the general management of laboratories equipment storerooms and chemicals.
  • Knowledge of the equipment and apparatus used in the geosciences environment.
  • Practical and proactive disposition and willingness to take responsibility.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and to undergo further training.
  • Computer literate.
