Hiring Range: $16.32 - $19.17 Per Hour

Range Explanation:

  • Hiring Range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors including your skills qualifications experience education licenses training and internal equity.

  • Pay Range is the entire compensation range for the position.

The Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department (RWRD) is seeking a part-time student intern to work with our operations and process control team. RWRD is engaged in a variety of research and innovation activities for process improvements within the water sector. Primary responsibilities would include designing and running pilot demonstrations water and wastewater treatment designs laboratory analysis data collection and data analytics and technical writing. This position might be working out of various locations but most likely out of the treatment facility at Ina and I-10 and up to 20 hours a week depending on school schedule. As the Engineering Intern you will perform professional-level engineering assistance under technical supervision in a specialized area requiring the development and application of engineering or related discipline principles practices and techniques.

Essential Functions:

As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act this classification may include any of the following tasks knowledge skills and other characteristics. Work assignments may vary depending on the departments need and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor.

  • Participates with professional engineering staff in the design and construction of public works projects;

  • Assists professional and paraprofessional engineering and planning staff in the collection processing and evaluation of pertinent field and technical data for assigned projects;

  • Conducts field surveys analysis and inspections of proposed sites or in-progress public works projects for compliance with plans and specifications;

  • Performs engineering drafting to include plotting survey notes cross sections profiles and improvements;

  • Prepares cost estimates and calculates materials lists for assigned projects;

  • Investigates documents and performs preliminary analysis of data related to unique engineering problems;

  • Assists in the review of subdivision improvement plats plans specifications and related materials;

  • Meets with technical supervisor to assess individual progress in assigned technical area and to identify educational and training goals to be achieved;

  • Provides troubleshooting diagnostics for instrumentation and control systems used for PLC and SCADA equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:

Current enrollment in an accredited college or university at the undergraduate or graduate level in an engineering (e.g. mechanical civil electrical) or related science discipline appropriate to departments needs (e.g. hydrology environmental sciences architecture watershed management transportation soil & water science computer science data analytics etc.).

Preferred Qualifications: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):

  • Experience with/knowledge of data collection analysis and ability to record findings in a database for validation.

  • Experience with/knowledge of interpreting process flow diagrams and blueprints.

  • Experience with/knowledge of water and wastewater treatment and process modeling.

  • Experience working in both field and office settings.

Selection Procedure:
Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.

Licenses and Certificates: Valid driver license is at time of application.ValidAZdriver license is at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicants suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services review and approval of the candidates driving record.

Special Notice Items: The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history education and criminal conviction history. A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County.
