The Team
You will be joining the Data Platform Engineering team part of the Data & Machine Learning department. Our platform named Codex serves as Man Groups centralised data platform. We have hundreds of internal users who use Codex to onboard map and deliver their data downstream. There are three main pillars of the platform:
- Data Acquisition - an ETL/ELT platform for research and production which scales to multi-terabyte datasets; and can index all data at Man for re-usability and discoverability.
- Data Governance - cataloguing the thousands of datasets at Man; allowing discovery entitlements data quality and end-to-end data lineage.
- Data Delivery - providing a unified interface across the thousands of datasets across Man with a focus on scaling identifier mapping and UX.
The technology team at Man Group has a start-up no-attitude feel. It has a flat-structured open transparent and collaborative environment providing plenty of opportunities to grow and have enormous impact on what we do. We are actively engaged with the broader data and technology community: with significant interests in open-source technology PyData ML meetups and others.
Role Responsibilities
Were looking for a high-performing Python Engineer to join the Engineering team of Man Groups central data platform named Codex. Projects dont get much more cross-cutting or high-profile than this: we have hundreds of internal users and whatever you work on will be used by teams across the business for years to come. Fundamentally we are not a data engineering team: we empower our internal userbase to become data engineers with our software.
This is a great time to join the team as we consider how to expand our offering to the entire business with some true greenfield projects.
Key Competencies
Essential skills
- 3 years of professional experience in software engineering ideally in Python.
- Strong academic record and higher education degree with high mathematical and computing content e.g. computer science mathematics finance.
- Proven track record of collaborating effectively in cross-functional teams with excellent communication skills.
- Experience building reliable production-grade applications.
- In-depth working knowledge of one or more relevant database technologies such as Snowflake PostgreSQL Iceberg or MongoDB.
- Strong interest in tackling data-related challenges at scale.
- Mastery of (at least) one programming language modern software engineering principles and clean code practices.
- Self-organised with the ability to effectively manage time across multiple projects and with competing business demands and priorities.
- Strong interpersonal skills; able to establish and maintain a close working relationship with quantitative researchers technologists traders and senior businesspeople alike.
- A self-starter who can spot opportunities communicate them effectively and deliver them.
Advantageous
- Deep knowledge of data modelling data lakehouses medallion architecture
- Familiarity with one or more relevant databases or open table formats e.g. Apache Iceberg PostgreSQL Snowflake etc.
- Experience working with large and unstructured datasets.
- Hands-on experience with financial data vendors and understanding of market data structures.
- Stakeholder management skills with proven ability to work effectively across different teams and seniority levels internally and externally.
- Hands-on attitude; willing to get involved with data and projects across the firm.
- Confident communicator: able to argue a point concisely and deal positively with conflicting views.
- Experience with our tooling stack: Linux / UNIX Git Jira Slack etc.
