(National Prisons Hepatitis Education Program)

This is a pivotal role in making a difference to public health and prisoner education in Western Australia. If you are passionate about improving health outcomes and have the experience to deliver impactful education programs wed love to hear from you!

Employment Status: Fixed term Full-time Fixed-term contract from as soon as possible until 30 November 2026 with the possibility of extension pending ongoing funding.

About You

ASHM is seeking a dedicated culturally grounded and experienced Nurse Nurse Educator or Hepatitis Educator to join our team for an exciting opportunity to lead the implementation of the HepPEd (National Prisons Hepatitis Education Program) across six Western Australian Prisons. This critical role will directly support the Western Australia Department of Justice in ensuring the successful delivery of Hepatitis education and prevention initiatives.

About HepPEd

The HepPEd (National Prisons Hepatitis Education Project) is an innovative evidence-based education program designed to enhance the public health literacy (knowledge attitudes capabilities) of the prison sector in relation to hepatitis C harm reduction and improve HCV testing and treatment uptake within Australian correctional centres. The HepPEd Program involves a suite of multi-modal resources across three interconnected streams: healthcare providers custodial staff and people in prison. ASHM is working with the National Prisons Hepatitis Network (NPHN) to implement HepPEd. The NPHN is dedicated to enhancing hepatitis C care for people incarcerated in Australian prisons by facilitating a coordinated approach to prison-based hepatitis C elimination.

Key Responsibilities

  • Liaise with stakeholders from various Government Departments and the six identified Western Australian Prisons to effectively coordinate and integrate within each prisons operational structure.
  • Lead and facilitate the delivery of the HepPEd Project to Health Service staff Correctional Officers and people in prison utilizing an established education package.
  • Ensure the project is executed within the set timeframes and aligns with the required guidelines and standards.
  • Collaborate with the project team and stakeholders to maintain continuous progress and track milestones ensuring smooth project delivery.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Tertiary qualifications in Nursing Health Education Public Health or similar are essential.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders supported by strong verbal communication skills and a proven capacity to problem-solve quickly and efficiently in fast-paced or complex situations.
  • Experience in producing clear concise and well-structured written communication including contributing to and preparing high-quality project reports.
  • Strong facilitation skills with proven experience in delivering health education sessions and effectively leading workshops to engage and inform diverse audiences.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively by prioritising workload meeting project deadlines and working independently to achieve outcomes.
  • Experience working within the Prisons in Western Australia
  • Experience engaging with health professionals. Knowledge of health workforce education and development.
  • Experience in non-for-profit sector Government and/or Non-Government Organisations.

Skills and Abilities

  • Lead the facilitation and delivery of the health education to Health Service staff Correctional Officers and people in prison utilising an already established education package.
  • Facilitate workshop-style peer education programs designed to upskill selected people in prison and correctional officers and provide ongoing support for these peer educators.
  • Liaise with stakeholders from a range of Government Departments and from the six identified Western Australian prisons to coordinate and manage logistics of implementation within each Prisons operational structure to deliver the project streams within the required timeframes.
  • Conduct surveys and pre and post evaluations with target audience members.
  • Ensure that the project is implemented within the required timeframes.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to engage with a wide range of stakeholders. Proven capacity to problem-solve quickly and efficiently even in fast-paced or complex situations.
  • A strong desire to work in a fair non-judgmental environment especially with individuals affected by HIV viral hepatitis and related diseases.
  • A solid understanding of blood-borne viruses with a particular focus on hepatitis C to ensure informed and effective educational delivery.
