Job Summary
The Director serves as the senior administrative leadership resource in key educational and programmatic initiatives of the Mass General Brigham (MGB) Academic Medical Centers (AMC) Department of Psychiatry (AMC Psychiatry) the integrated department of the AMCs (Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Womens Hospital). Specifically the Director has direct responsibility for the administrative leadership strategic planning operating results and regulatory alignment of the Departments education programs. The scope includes the Harvard Medical School (HMS) student education program residency programs psychology internships and psychiatry and psychology fellowship programs within the Department. The individual in this role will provide essential counsel to the Departments Vice Chairs and Division/Associate Chiefs with regard to educational matters. The Director will also lead the Departments Education Administration strategic planning and program development efforts. The Director is a key education strategic partner who regularly communicates with prepares materials for and provides essential counsel to HMS student education leaders the Residency Program Directors (PDs) and other program faculty leaders and the Department and other educational leaders inside and outside of MGB. The individual in this role will also be responsible for centrally convening coordinating and enhancing the performance of numerous nationally recognized and impactful centers institutes and programs some of which will be under the direct management of the individual in this role and others that will be indirectly led through embedded program staff and close collaboration with faculty leaders.Qualifications

The individual in this role will also be responsible for centrally convening coordinating and enhancing the performance of numerous nationally recognized and impactful centers institutes and programs some of which will be under the direct management of the individual in this role and others that will be indirectly led through embedded program staff and close collaboration with faculty leaders.
The integrated AMC Psychiatry will be a large and complex department with 2400 employees/extended workforce including almost 900 credentialed faculty over 200 clinical trainees as well as hundreds of research fellows clinical research coordinators and administrative staff. Across Mass General and Brigham (which includes Brigham and Womens Faulkner Hospital) sites the integrated department will occupy approximately 185000 square feet of office clinical and research space and perform over 300000 ambulatory and inpatient consultation visits per year. Clinical service sites include two 24-bed psychiatric inpatient units a 14-bed substance use unit two partial hospital programs inpatient consultative services a dedicated emergency psychiatric service and several neurotherapeutic procedural services. The clinical/administrative operations budget totals $175 million and research expenditures are approximately $120 million annually with a significant annual growth rate. AMC Psychiatry also serves as a critical feature of an increasingly integrated Behavioral and Mental Health platform for the system ensuring coordination collaboration and alignment in all activities across the AMCs Specialty Hospitals and the community hospitals and provider organizations within the MGB Medical Group.
Reporting directly to the AMC Vice President of the Department of Psychiatry the Director will work in close collaboration with the AMC Vice Chair for Education as well as the relevant Vice Chairs Division Chiefs and Associate Chiefs on the broad cross section of educational and programmatic matters for the Department. The individual in this role will also partner with relevant leaders across the AMC and Massachusetts General Physicians Organization (MGPO)/Brigham and Womens Physician Organization (BWPO). Drawing on a broad understanding of hospital practices/policies and displaying a high degree of initiative and independent judgment the individual in this role will continually assess manage and direct a wide range of issues including education program policy clinical operations personnel management practice management billing/finance long-range planning facilities/systems and project/program development. They will work with all the physicians and practice management staff to ensure a quality-based customer-oriented flow of work.
The Director will also serve as a key administrative leader for the unified department of Psychiatry. The individual in this role will work with the AMC Vice President to develop and execute upon a plan to horizontally integrate most activities and structures that are presently distinct across the two institutions. This will require not only strategic acumen and interpersonal sensitivity during a time of significant change but also serving on a team that simultaneously supports ongoing integration efforts and the day-to-day operations of a large department with broadly distributed people and assets.
Essential Functions (Key Roles & Responsibilities)
List up to 6-9 key outcome-based roles and responsibilities of this job.
1. Continuously interfaces and coordinates with the Departmental Hospital MGB HMS and other organization leadership on all matters of Department of Psychiatry education.
2. Ensures Department of Psychiatry administrative leadership supports and maintains representation on all MGH BWH HMS MGB and other relevant organizational education administration committees as assigned.
3. Holds ultimate responsibility for the coordination of all Department of Psychiatry-related HMS courses. The individual in this role will supervise team members responsible for the creation of student and preceptor schedules student educational files course logistics including reimbursements for preceptors.
4. Holds ultimate responsibility for the coordination of all Department-related residency internship and fellowship overseeing the residency and fellowship programs these responsibilities include directly or via program coordinators: communication with GME constituents program accreditation and compliance resident/fellow schedules evaluations resident/fellow appointments and credentialing resident/fellow files recruitment and orientation and other program responsibilities.
5. Manages facilities space and equipment inventories for the relevant areas of the department in collaboration with the Vice President and MGB/MGH/BWH administration.
6. Ensures healthy and collaborative relationships among the faculty and staff within the responsible operational areas and with the hospital the related departments and across Mass General Brigham (MGB).
7. Directly and indirectly manages programs centers institutes and their staff whether directly or indirectly in close collaboration with faculty leadership in each instance.
8. Determines and prioritizes resource needs for relevant programs centers and institutes. Works closely with program staff and faculty leaders and in conjunction with department finance leadership to ensure cost effective operations and sustainable financial performance.
