TITLE: Special Education Teacher Teacher of the Visually Impaired

REPORTS TO: Chief Student Services Officer

POSITION SUMMARY

The Teacher of the Visually Impaired assesses plans organizes and teaches vision compensatory skills for visually impaired students ages 3 through 21 in the school and community. Direct services as well as consultation is provided to students schools staff and parents. The teacher works with other staff to integrate students into the regular classroom. The teacher travels to the students assigned schools to provide direction and/or consultative special education services relating to the vision loss.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Valid teaching certificate for the State of Washington plus certification and/or endorsement in Special Education
  • Applicants with direct instruction data collection behavior management and analysis skills will be preferred
  • Literary Braille Transcriber as defined by Library of Congress
  • Unified English Braille
  • Prior experience in the school setting preferred
  • Must meet the definition for highly qualified in the core subject areas of assignment
  • Such other qualifications as the Board and Superintendent may find appropriate
  • Current valid CPR and First Aid may be required for the specific assignment

Special Requirements

  • Valid First Aid/CPR card
  • Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint clearance
  • I-9 employment eligibility in compliance with the Immigrations Reform and Control Act
  • HIV/HBV training (obtain within 60 days of hire date District provided)
  • Human Resources new hire training (obtain within 60 days of hire date District provided)

  • Principles goals and objectives of public education
  • Curriculum and other developmental programs
  • Demonstrated ability to teach Braille
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement appropriate positive behavior interventions for students
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with K-12 students with staff and multicultural community
  • Cultural competency; ability to effectively work with diverse populations
  • Abide by all district policies and procedures along with building/department practices
  • Adhere to federal state laws and district regulations policies procedures and practices
  • Mandatory reporter for incidents of child abuse harassment intimidation bullying fights substance abuse etc.

  • Abides by employment provisions provided for in the collective bargaining agreement
  • Observe strict confidentiality regarding student information
  • Maintain regular punctual attendance

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions:

Under the direction of the Chief Student Services Officer and in collaboration with building principals the Teacher of the Visually Impaired is responsible for:

  • Designing and implementing an appropriate educational program in the least restrictive environment for students with vision impairments
  • Actively participate/collaborate in an instructional team with other Special Education staff who are serving students with vision impairments
  • Providing differentiated instruction for all students including special education
  • Writing Individual Educational Programs for students with vision impairments
  • Adapting classroom materials for all students with vision impairments
  • Providing direct instruction in Braille
  • Providing instruction in the use of low vision aids and assistive technology
  • Translating print into Braille using software programs
  • Implementing State and Federal guidelines for educating children with disabilities
  • Participating in appropriate in-service and career development activities.
  • Demonstrate organizational and classroom management skills in the classroom
  • Maintain regular attendance; adhere to board policy and the mutually bargained leave and attendance terms as stated in the collective bargaining agreement
  • Perform appropriate tasks as designated by the principal/program head or department head in relation to the responsibilities and functions listed above

RELATIONSHIPS
The Teacher of the Visually Impaired reports directly to the Chief Student Services Officer and maintains the following relationships:

Building Principal and Program Directors The teacher is supervised and accountable to the Chief Student Services Officer for interpreting and executing the above responsibilities in addition to other related responsibilities.

Personnel/Staff Members The teacher communicates regularly with program staff building personnel and other staff members in order to assist them in meeting District program teacher is considered a support staff rather than administrative position.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of this job.

The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions:

  • Use of a personal computer for extended periods of time
  • Use of a telephone and other office equipment
  • Ability to perceive the nature of sound; near/far visual acuity depth perception
  • Ability to communicate orally; manual dexterity to operate office machines gross and fine motor skills
  • Exert 10 to 20 pounds of force on a frequent basis
  • Ability to lift carry push pull or otherwise move objects
  • Sit for extended periods of time walk stand
  • Attend off site trainings and workshops as deemed necessary
  • Work is conducted in a shared open office environment with consideration toward equipment noise confidentiality voice volume
  • The job is performed with the majority of time spent indoors and under minimal temperature variations; a portion of the day may be time spent outdoors and is subject to a variety of changing weather conditions and potentially uneven/slippery surfaces.

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS

This position is that of Special Education Teacher Teacher of the Visually Impaired and is represented by the Monroe Education Association collective bargaining unit. The position will work a schedule in coordination with the District student calendar. Salary and benefits as determined by the current collective bargaining agreement. Employee is required to complete all mandatory district trainings.

EVALUATION PROCEDURES

The Special Education Teacher Teacher of the Visually Impaired shall be evaluated by the Chief Student Services Officer according to currently established district procedures and evaluation criteria. The process shall include an evaluation of the employees performance of the above position responsibilities.
