This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workdays. The NC Department of Environmental Quality trusts our employees to be self-motivated and successful in hybrid/remote roles. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management.
This position is an entry level Information and Communications Specialist position located in the Central Office (CO) and will work in the areas of air quality education/outreach. This position will work closely with community groups citizens students and a variety of groups to communicate information to reduce air pollution and improve air quality. This position requires the understanding and dissemination of scientific knowledge regarding air quality air pollution sources and solutions meteorology different mobile sources of air pollution and how they impact air quality. The employee is responsible for supporting air quality education and outreach activities delivering education lessons and activities to NC students and communicating NC Air Awareness messages to the public in a variety of settings indoors and outdoors. The employee will communicate air quality information to the public launch projects aimed at educating the public about air quality promote behavior changes to reduce air pollution and encourage actions that help protect peoples health. The employee will support DAQs mission to protect and improve outdoor (or ambient) air quality in North Carolina for the health benefit and economic well-being of residents. Some weekend and some evening and night work may be required.

The Division of Air Quality (DAQ) works with the states citizens to protect and improve outdoor or ambient air quality in North Carolina for the health benefit and economic well-being of all. To carry out this mission the DAQ operates a statewide air quality monitoring network to measure the level of pollutants in the outdoor air develops and implements plans to meet future air quality initiatives assures compliance with air quality rules and educates informs and assists the public with regard to air quality issues. Bachelors degree in communications public relations public affairs journalism English or related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
