REPORTS TO: Transportation Fleet Manager

SCHOOL YEAR POSITION

General Summary

The School Bus Technician Helper assists the Fleet Manager in the safe efficient maintenance of all school vehicles and reports to the Fleet Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Performs minor repairs and minor preventive maintenance.
  2. Checks all vehicle fluid levels tires and similar items.
  3. Washes vehicle interior and exterior.
  4. Fuels vehicles as required.
  5. Drives school bus when requested.
  6. Picks up inventories and stocks parts.
  7. Maintains effective and cooperative working relationships with all other staff members.
  8. Assists in garage opening closing and area security.
  9. Cleans building in the department as required.
  10. Performs snow plowing shoveling sanding and other winter duties.
  11. Records all work performed including hours parts and fluids added.
  12. Performs minor road service.
  13. Performs outside yard and building maintenance.
  14. Completes and maintains required records and reports.
  15. Assists School Bus Technicians in performing their assigned duties.
  16. Performs all assigned duties in a manner in which contributes to the safety and well being of the staff and buildings.
  17. Performs all other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities Required:

  1. High school diploma or GED required college or trade school classes preferred.
  2. Previous employment history in vehicle or building maintenance.
  3. Good driving record.
  4. Must be certified school bus driver or able to become one and have Class B Air Brake and Passenger endorsements within 90 days of employment.
  5. Possess good habits character and attendance record.
  6. Be neat in appearance.
  7. Be able to speak read and write at a level of proficiency that permits satisfactory job performance.
  8. Be capable and demonstrate the establishment and maintenance of harmonious effective relationships with staff students supervisors and co-workers.
  9. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  10. Possess a willingness to learn new job skills and techniques.
  11. The ability to move about the facility or building including bending pushing/pulling lifting twisting climbing stooping or crouching to complete work-related tasks.
  12. Must possess skills to safely operate a variety of tools and equipment.
  13. Basic technology skills required to utilize computer and/or other office equipment (printer/copy machine etc.) consistent with work-related tasks.
  14. The ability to work independently and maintain effective time management.
  15. The ability to work effectively and efficiently in high stress or conflict situations.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  1. Must be able to report on a regular and consistent basis to the assigned facility or worksite.
  2. Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
  3. Duties include frequent walking and physical activity.
  4. The ability to move about the facility or building including bending pushing/pulling lifting twisting climbing stooping or crouching to complete work-related tasks.
  5. Must possess skills to safely operate a variety of tools and equipment.
  6. Basic technology skills required to utilize computer and/or other office equipment (printer/copy machine etc.) consistent with work-related tasks.
  7. The ability to listen and effectively communicate information and ideas to a diverse population.
  8. The ability to effectively discern information and formulate appropriate action(s).
  9. The ability to critically think and provide appropriate solutions.
  10. The ability to work independently and maintain effective time management.
  11. The ability to work effectively and efficiently in high stress or conflict situations.
  12. Occasionally moves boxes equipment and other supplies weighing up to 50 lbs across the building for various needs.

Environmental Conditions:

Incumbents work in both indoor and outdoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels. Work may be completed in controlled temperature conditions; however duties may be completed in cold and hot temperatures or inclement weather conditions. Duties may include exposure to chemicals and mechanical and electrical hazards.

Work Schedules:

Must be available for on-call work overtime and/or emergency overtime before and/or after regular scheduled workday when necessary.
