Position Description:
The Director of Philanthropy provides strategic leadership and management for Phoenix Rescue Missions mid-level major gift and planned giving programs. The Director is responsible for cultivating a culture of philanthropy growing contributed revenue through relationship-based fundraising and ensuring best practices in donor engagement portfolio management and moves management.
The Director will carry a personal portfolio of major donors and prospects and is expected to model best-in-class relationship fundraising.
This individual will work closely with Development Marketing and Program teams to align messaging and strategies deepen donor commitment and help advance the Missions goals through transformational giving.
Reports to: Chief Development Officer Greg Forney
Essential Functions:
Management and Leadership
- Lead and manage the Philanthropy team including the Philanthropy Manager and Senior Philanthropy Officers fostering a high-performance mission-driven culture.
- Provide strategic direction and oversight for all mid-level and major gift fundraising activities.
- Coach and develop philanthropy staff ensuring strong fundraising competencies and growth opportunities.
- Contribute budget planning and forecasting for philanthropic revenue streams.
- Deliver timely revenue reports and updates to the CDO on monthly revenue gifts in the pipeline and projects in progress.
- Collaborate with the CDO Marketing and the Philanthropy team to deliver timely relevant and personalized impact reports to donors.
- Work and collaborate cross-functionally with programs and finances to be an expert at PRM funding opportunities for major and mid-level donors.
Fundraising
- Develop annual fundraising goals and metrics for team members and ensure accountability through regular portfolio reviews and performance tracking.
- Partner with the CDO and CEO to develop strategies for top-tier donors and prospects.
- Ensure consistent use of CRM (Virtuous) to track donor interactions manage moves management and maintain portfolio integrity.
- Personally manage a portfolio of high-capacity major donors and prospects engaging in cultivation solicitation and stewardship activities.
- Create strategic plans for donor retention and upgrading including personalized donor experiences proposals and impact reporting.
- Collaborate with the Director of Donor Engagement to develop donor experiences that increase conversion from pre-mid to mid-level donors.
- Collaborate with the Philanthropy Manager and Senior Philanthropy Officers to design and implement scalable mid-level donor strategies including segmentation outreach and stewardship.
Ministerial
- Share what Jesus is doing at Phoenix Rescue Mission with donors and be comfortable when invited praying with and encouraging donors in their faith journey.
- Maintain a Christ-centered team culture and lead opportunities for worship and spirituality on the team.
Other
- Demonstrate understanding and comply with all relevant legal regulatory and compliance requirements company policies and procedures and the Code of Ethical Conduct.
- Follow the Missions Statement of Faith and adhere to the Missions employee policy manual and guidelines set forth by the CEO.
- Perform other duties within scope as assigned contributing to the teams overall success in achieving excellence.

Education and Experience:
- Bachelors degree in communications marketing nonprofit management business administration or related field and at least 7 years of experience in fundraising with at least 3 years of experience in major gifts or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least 5 years of supervisory experience resulting in strong demonstrated leadership administrative and supervisory skills.
- Proven success in securing five- and six-figure gifts from individual donors.
- Experience managing and mentoring fundraisers.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities:
- Familiarity with CRM systems (preferably Virtuous) and fundraising analytics.
- Demonstrated expertise in relationship-based fundraising and major gift strategy.
- Strong leadership and coaching skills to build and sustain a successful team.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills including donor correspondence and proposal writing.
- Highly organized results-driven and self-motivated.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence in donor interactions.
- Strong analytical thinking with the ability to use data to drive decisions.
- A collaborative team player able to work cross-functionally and support organizational goals.
- High level of integrity and discretion in working with confidential information.
Additional Requirements:
- A solid and credible Christian witness and lifestyle that exemplifies Christ in character and actions ministering to those who support the Mission.
- Position may require weekend or evening responsibilities.
- Must meet and maintain the requirements of being an approved driver and driving a personal vehicle on Mission business.
