Job Description

Instructional Assistant
Exempt Status: Non-Exempt

125 days Monday - Thursday

Class Code: 7318

Job Summary

Assist in providing instruction to individuals or small groups monitoring and reporting student progress. The Instructional Assistant supports thelearning process by performing various tasks in a regular classroom setting working within a complex program requiring additional skills and characterized by increased independence of action.

Key Responsibilities

  • Instruction and Tutoring:
    • Tutor individuals or small groups of students reinforcing and implementing instruction as directed.
    • Maintain records of student progress.
    • Participate as a member of an instructional team including remediation teams.
    • Prepare and organize lessons as directed.
    • Administer and score a variety of tests according to established guidelines.
    • Assist in determining English proficiency of identified students.
  • Behavior and Safety:
    • Monitor and report behavior of students according to approved procedures.
    • Report progress regarding student performance and behavior.
    • Check and assist students with lab work as necessary.
    • Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and regulations.
  • Classroom Support:
    • Perform routine clerical duties such as preparing instructional andeducational materials.
    • Operate copy machines and maintain classroom records including attendance records.
    • Set up work areas displays and exhibits.
    • Operate audio-visual and educational training equipment.
    • Distribute and collect paper and supplies.
  • Supervision:
    • Assist in overseeing students in labs and other activities.
    • Assist in emergency drills assemblies play periods and field trips.
  • Communication and Collaboration:
    • Confer with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student needs.
    • Contact parents of absent students and make home visits if necessary.
    • Participate in meetings and in-service training programs as assigned.
  • Student Interaction:
    • Provide proper examples emotional support a friendly attitude and general guidance to students.
    • Direct group activities of students as assigned.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Basic subjects taught in District schools including arithmetic grammar spelling language and reading.
  • Safe practices in classroom and playground activities.
  • Correct English usage grammar spelling punctuation and vocabulary.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact patience and courtesy.
  • Basic record-keeping techniques.
  • Child guidance principles and practices.
  • Effective communication and relationship maintenance with students parents staff and the public.
  • Routine clerical duties in support of classroom activities.
  • Basic arithmetic skills.
  • Understanding and following oral and written directions.
  • Applying and explaining policies and procedures related to school and program activities.
  • Operating instructional and office equipment.

Job Requirements

  • Strict adherence to the Kentucky Certified Code of Ethics (704 KAR 20:680).
  • Ability to stand sit and walk.
  • Effective communication using speech vision written language and hearing.
  • Use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations.
  • Ability to lift carry push or pull light objects and students up to 25 lbs.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma G.E.D. Certificate or demonstrated progress toward obtaining a G.E.D. as required by Kentucky law.
  • One year of experience in the operation of a motor vehicle.

Licenses and Other Requirements

  • Must pass a driving record check.
  • National and state criminal history background check.
  • Letter from the Cabinet for Health and Family Services stating no administrative findings of child abuse or neglect.
