THE ROLE:
The Senior Director of Payor Relations leads the organizations strategy for building and strengthening relationships with Managed Care Organizations (MCOs) payors and key partners. This role drives growth through contract negotiations policy influence and strategic partnerships positioning the company as a trusted value-added partner. By aligning payor engagement with organizational goals this leader ensures compliance with Medi-Cal CalAIM VA and other regulatory programs while securing sustainable agreements that expand services and impact statewide.
Primary Responsibilities
Lead and strengthen relationships with MCOs payors and regulators positioning the organization as a top strategic partner.
Negotiate contracts and reimbursement terms that align with organizational priorities financial sustainability and compliance requirements.
Influence payor policy and program design to create favorable conditions for scalable quality-driven growth.
Partner with cross-functional teams to ensure contracts are financially and operationally viable and fully compliant with regulatory standards.
Drive growth by expanding payor reach generating leads and opening new opportunities for program and geographic expansion.
Use data and analytics to monitor payor performance identify trends and make actionable recommendations to leadership.
Serve as the primary escalation point for payor relationship or contract issues ensuring risks are mitigated and concerns resolved strategically.
This role is California-based and ideal for someone located near a major airport as it involves up to 80% in-state travel. Youll be out in the field often meeting with payor partners agencies and community teams helping to shape the future of care across California.
This is a hybrid position reporting into the El Segundo CA office one day per quarter.
WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE:
Skills
Relationship management and influence across MCOs payors regulators and internal stakeholders
Expertise in contract negotiation and structuring favorable agreements
Strategic thinking and analytical ability to interpret payor data and provide insights
Strong cross-functional leadership and collaboration skills
Excellent communication and presentation abilities including executive and external representation
Project management skills to oversee multiple contracts and initiatives simultaneously
Risk awareness problem-solving and decision-making under complex conditions
Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Business Healthcare Administration Public Policy Finance or related field; Masters preferred
7 years of experience in payor relations managed care contracting Medicaid/Medicare strategy or government healthcare programs
Deep knowledge of California Medi-Cal and CalAIM programs; VA program experience strongly preferred
Proven track record in contract negotiation payor relationship management and influencing payor policies or programs
Experience managing multiple payors or large-scale managed care programs
Proficiency with CRM and project management tools (e.g. Salesforce Asana Trello)
