Job Description

Assist the head coach in day-to-day operations of the football program with a primary focus on the offensive side of the ball. This includes but is not limited to coaching player development recruiting scouting academic support and general operations all while ensuring compliance with NCAA rules.

This is a part-time exempt position averaging 20 hours a week.

Required Education

  • Bachelors degree required; Masters degree preferred.

Required Experience

  • Five or more years of experience.
  • Previous coaching playing and/or teaching experience.

Primary Duties/Essential Functions

  • Develop implement and adjust a comprehensive offensive game plan and scheme including play calls formations and strategies tailored to the teams strengths and opponent weaknesses.
  • Create and maintain the official offensive playbook ensuring clear communication of schemes assignments and terminology to all offensive players and coaching staff.
  • Provide specialized coaching and mentorship to quarterbacks focusing on technique decision-making leadership and understanding of the offensive system.
  • Oversee and/or directly coach specific offensive position groups ensuring fundamental skill development and scheme execution.
  • Conduct in-depth scouting and analysis of opposing defenses identifying tendencies strengths and weaknesses to inform offensive game planning.
  • Design and script offensive portions of practice sessions ensuring efficient use of time and alignment with game plan objectives.
  • Serve as the primary play-caller during games making real-time adjustments to offensive strategy based on game flow and opponent reactions.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with the entire offensive coaching staff delegating responsibilities ensuring consistent messaging and fostering a cohesive unit.
  • Evaluate individual and collective offensive performance utilizing game film and analytics to identify areas for improvement and guide player development.
  • Teach and develop sport-specific skills with the basic tenets and theory of the sport and skills needed to execute successful collegiate-level performance.
  • Coordinate discipleship and mentoring of student-athletes.
  • Aid in the physical development and organizational motivation of the team.
  • Organize and lead team and/or individual-athlete meetings involving coaching personnel.
  • Planning of practice sessions and competitive coaching situations.
  • Ensure student compliance with rules regarding behavior and appearance.
  • Coordinate team conditioning/training in conjunction with athletic trainers and team physicians.
  • Work cooperatively with university coaches staff faculty and community members.
  • Identify and evaluate prospective student athletes who are good social academic and athletic fits for the university; communicate with PSAs and families; process official and unofficial visits while communicating through the completion of necessary admissions and university documents.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with local high school and club coaches.
  • Comprehend and operate by standards set forth in the NCAA and APU Manuals.
  • Ensure education and enforcement of NCAA rules as they relate to documentation and input of information in JumpForward and the NCAA Institutional Request List (IRL).
  • Attend required department meetings and NCAA rules presentations.
  • Assist in scheduling contests scrimmages and exhibitions while coordinating team travel arrangements within guidelines set by the department institution conference and NCAA.
  • Assist in fundraising alumni relations community outreach and ministry opportunities communicating the current status of the program with alumni friends and supporters of the program.
  • Supervise equipment in annual procurement inventory distribution and collection.

Skills

  • Sufficient experience to justify coaching recruiting compliance and academic support.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to relate to a variety of personalities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of current thinking in areas of sport techniques and strategy conditioning fitness leadership and program management.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead motivate and minister to student athletes.
  • Excellent communication skills: both oral and written.
  • Responsible driving skills.

  • Ability to work under pressure exuding a mature demeanor while multitasking in a deadline-oriented environment with accuracy and consistency.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team as well as an independent contributor.

  • Self-starter with a positive attitude and demonstrated loyalty to the staff program and university.

  • Ability to conduct business at other offices on campus.
  • Ability to bend grasp reach and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Reading writing notes and computer monitor.

Environment

  • Office indoor and outdoor athletic facilities various weather and temperature conditions.

Technologies

  • Proficient in Google Apps Microsoft Office Hudl compliance software and other sport-specific web-based and/or scouting applications.

Compensation

  • Grade 14: $36862 to $42391 is the annual salary for this role and reflects what Azusa Pacific University reasonably expects to pay for this position. Actual compensation may vary based on the qualifications experience and internal addition to compensation APU offers a competitive benefits package.
