Job Description

MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN I

Department: Public Services

Division: Parks & Cemetery - Structural Maintenance

Pay: GRADE 120 $44780.65 - $64931.95 Annual Salary ($21.53 - $31.22 Hourly)

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Merit Full-Time Eligible for Benefits

GENERAL PURPOSE

This position performs a variety of semi-skilled duties involved in the planning caring and maintaining major park and recreational facilities and performs specialized projects as required. Receives general supervision from the Parks Structural Maintenance Supervisor and direct functional supervision from the Parks Structural Maintenance Crew Leader. Will be responsible for the Weber County Community Service Workers periodically and will carry out rules and policies associated with this program. May also serve as a field foreman for up to six crew members.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • To perform various semi-skilled duties involved in planning caring for and maintaining major park and recreational facilities.
  • Assist in troubleshooting minor electrical issues.
  • Perform and assist in welding and metal fabrication.
  • Perform specialized projects as required.
  • Perform tasks involving entry-level carpentry skills.
  • Participate in various facilities maintenance duties including maintaining park buildings installing and maintaining fencing repairing park benches and clearing debris from parking lots and other areas.
  • Participate in a variety of park maintenance duties including plant maintenance and landscape duties including trimming and removing trees and shrubs pulling weeds mowing and edging lawns preparing for and laying sod raking recreation areas watering plants and trees sweeping and clearing fallen trees from the public paths and walkways.
  • Plant and replant trees as necessary
  • Ability to use a computer or electronic device to aid in job functions.
  • Inspect playground equipment and remove possible hazards to ensure safety.
  • Prepare documentation regarding safety checks.
  • Inspect and operate a variety of tools and equipment including power tools dump trucks backhoes excavators lawn mowers edgers trimmers and blowers etc.
  • Perform general maintenance duties including refueling changing oil and lubricating parts; make minor adjustments as necessary.
  • Maintained restroom and pavilion facilities including repairing broken features.
  • Paint as required.
  • Interact with patrons citizens and employees professionally and courteously.
  • Assist with set-up take-down and running of special events including Christmas Village and the Ogden Pioneer Days Rodeo
  • Assist with the construction and refurbishing of various structures.
  • Prepare ground and set forms for concrete pour and finish concrete.
  • Patrol and inspect parks to ensure the safety of the public and park facilities. Note possible safety hazards or causes of injury and contact with appropriate law enforcement or emergency agencies as required.
  • Perform snow and ice control/removal with shovels plows blowers and spreaders.
  • Prepare appropriate reports and documentation.
  • Assist with cemetery maintenance interments and dis-interments.
  • Assist with planting caring and maintaining trees throughout the city including removing trees within city ROW.
  • Participate in safety and risk management activities; take action to reduce liability to the city.
  • Attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this position. Employees are required to work as a team and frequently meet with co-workers and supervisors; employees are required to communicate in person with the public during office hours; and employees are required to use on-site equipment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • At least one year of experience in building and grounds maintenance or any of the following: carpentry electrical plumbing or trail maintenance.
  • High school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may qualify.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possession of or ability to obtain within 150 days a Utah State Class A CDL with tanker and air brake endorsements.
  • Employees must complete NIMS IS100 and IS700 within six months of hire.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the care operation and maintenance of various power tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of building repair techniques.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of the safe and effective operation of a variety of power tools and equipment
  • Skill in identifying possible safety hazards and reacting accordingly.
  • Skill in performing minor building repairs.
  • Skill in observing possible safety hazards and reacting accordingly.
  • Skill in operating a variety of power tools and equipment safely and effectively.
  • Skill in communicating clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain assigned park facilities.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include walking and standing for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception is needed for making observations communicating with others and operating assigned maintenance equipment and vehicles as required by the position.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during work.
  • Ability to maintain mental capacity allowing effective interaction and communication with others.
  • Ability to comply with all city policies and regulations including safety and risk management standards.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work environment is primarily outdoors which may expose the employee to moderate to very loud noises wet or humid conditions moving mechanical parts high and precarious places fumes or airborne particles toxic or caustic chemicals outdoor weather conditions extreme heat risk of electrical shock and vibrations.
  • Travel among worksites is required which exposes the worker to the hazards incident to travel by vehicle.
  • Will be expected to respond to and work additional shifts as the need arises to include 12-hour (longer in emergency) shifts weekends and holidays.
  • The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally up to 25 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must possess the visual ability to see clearly at close (less than 20 inches) and far (20 feet or more) distances identify and distinguish colors observe an area that can be seen up and down or left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point judge distances and spatial relationships and adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus.
  • Additionally the following physical abilities are required: standing walking sitting using hands and fingers to handle or feel reaching with hands and arms climbing balancing stooping kneeling crouching crawling talking hearing and smelling.
