Job Description

Summary/objective

Grounds Keepers oversee facility grounds to include turf shrubs trees flowerbeds and other minor landscaping work. They provide trash collection and disposal snow removal policing and minor maintenance of parking lots drives and sidewalks. They use and help maintain a variety of motorized equipment and hand tools. Grounds Keepers may be asked to work additional hours to meet service requirements.

Essential functions

  • Maintain turf areas to include mowing edging weeding watering and fertilizing.
  • Maintain synthetic field and sports complex.
  • Assist in patching or resodding dead areas reseeding dethatching and aerating soil.
  • Maintain shrubs and trees to include trimming and shaping of branches; watering mulching and weeding; complete removal of shrubs and trees. Assist in the preparation of soil and the planting of new shrubs and trees. Remove dead leaves and other debris.
  • Maintain flowerbeds and other landscaped areas to include mulching weeding and watering removal of dead material preparation of beds and planting of new flowers and other decorative plants.
  • Remove trash/ recyclable collection and removal to designated dumpsters cleaning of trash containers.
  • Campus event setups and breakdowns of events occurring on and off the campus. This requires the placement of tables chairs for facility buildings and take to designated areas; police grounds parking lots driveways sidewalks and building entrance areas; sweep or blow clean as directed.
  • Assist in the removal of snow and ice and the dispensing of ice-melt chemicals.
  • Assist in pick-up delivery and unloading of fill dirt and mulch fertilizers and ground chemicals grounds care equipment and tools plants and shrubs etc. as needed to complete assigned work.
  • In the performance of duties listed above operate and help maintain lawn mowers (riding self-propelled and push types) weed eaters edgers (both powered and manual) shop trucks and tractors and related equipment.

Competencies

  • Experience in grounds maintenance/ landscaping is required.

Work environment

All work is outdoors in non climate-controlled environments.

Supervisory responsibilities

  • None

Physical demands

  • Requires full range of body motion including reaching stooping kneeling climbing and walking. Must be able to lift/carry items weighing up to 50 lbs. Requires standing for extended periods of time. Requires ability to operate motorized equipment requiring manual dexterity. Must have good vision with or without corrective lenses.
  • Must be able to understand/follow basic safety precautions involved in the use of maintenance materials the operation of motorized equipment hand and power tools and use of personal protective equipment.
  • Must be able to understand/follow basic safety precautions involved in the use of herbicide/ pesticide chemicals the use of personal protective equipment.

Required education and experience

  • High School Graduate or equivalent
  • Minimum 1 yr. prior grounds experience required.
  • Ability to obtain Registered Technician pesticide applicator certification.
  • Knowledge of materials and tools used in such work.
