DescriptionThe School of English is looking to hireone student co-ordinator for the Vikings for Schools student co-ordinator will be expected to work together with the current student co-ordinator sharing the work of running the Vikings for Schools programme.

Working Hours:40.5 hours in total across the role. To be arranged with the hiring manager
Pay Rate: 16.78 per hour plus holiday pay

The purpose of the Co-ordinator roles is to direct lead and support the activities of a group of volunteers engaged in the Vikings for Schools programmes.
In-house workshops will run across both the autumn and spring semesters with support from the School of English and student volunteers.
Responsibilities:
- Assisting the Placement Administrator to recruit students to the volunteering scheme i.e. giving a shout-out in appropriate Viking and Old English lectures/seminars in the School of English about volunteering opportunities in the following academic year running the VFS stall at the Faculty of Arts PGT Welcome Fair
- Plan and prepare the content for the autumn and spring semester workshops for visiting school children (based on existing materials)
- Support the volunteers by overseeing their participation in the autumn and spring semester workshops
- Incorporate the equipment of the CSVA (re-enactment equipment artefacts etc.) into all workshop plans (referring to the Equipment Safety Document and Conditions of Loan)
- Be responsible for the inventory of equipment: identifying appropriate equipment for use in on-site workshops reporting damaged items informing the administrative staff in the School Office if any items including stationery needs to be ordered
- Organise and deliver (and monitor volunteers participation in) a preparatory training session for student volunteers introducing them to Vikings for Schools workshop activities and monitor and ensure volunteers participation in any additional mandatory training for placement volunteers e.g. Safeguarding required by the School of English and organised by the University.
- Check volunteers understanding of the role profile and Student Volunteering Agreement
- Answer questions from volunteers and be a point of contact for them and for schools who are visiting the University for on-site workshops
- Maintain and update public-facing webpages associated with the project and monitor and maintain the email account
- Contact schools in advance of the autumn and spring workshop dates to book workshop days and respond to any queries received from schools
- Oversee the issue and return of equipment (referring to the Equipment Safety Document and Conditions of Loan) for on-site workshop use and ensure volunteers take appropriate safety precautions (especially when allowing children to handle dangerous/precious equipment)
Qualifications Knowledge and Skills:
- Prior study of the Vikings at University level. E.g. Studied at least one Viking/Old Norse module in the School of English or at an alternative University ideally at Level 3 or above.
- Excellent leadership interpersonal and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work under own initiative and as part of a team
- Ability to organise tasks and meet deadlines
- High levels of spoken English
- Excellent administrative skills including record keeping and attention to detail
- Passionate about education and able to share this enthusiasm with others
Desirable:
- Prior study of Old English and/or Place-Names at University level. E.g. Studied at least one Place-Names/Old English module in the School of English or at an alternative University ideally at Level 3 or above.
- Knowledge of the British Education System and the Widening Participation agenda
- Understanding of safeguarding and child protection issues
- Previous experience as a volunteer on the Vikings for Schools project
