Paraprofessional Special Education LAP Program

CoelhoMiddle School

General education and special education staff work collaboratively to ensure access to the general education curriculum. Services are delivered in a variety of models including push-in small group 1:1 and pull-out emphasizingacademic skill development including reading mathematics written language expressive/receptive communication problem-solving and organization.

Job Purpose

Under the direct supervision of certified staff members assist the professional staff with students in the classroom to meet academic and social-emotional goals and objectives and implement positive behavioral supports.

Reports to:Building Principal and/or designee

Essential Job Functions

  • Assist in classroom preparations and strategies for reinforcing academicsocial-emotional and behavioral skills according to individual student needs.
  • Assist with individual class and schoolwide positive behavioral supports to support a safe learning environment.
  • Work with students individually and in small groups.
  • Assist professional staff in data collection:academic behavioral and adaptive skills
  • Assist students in non-instructional areas such as supervising the student lunch programs bus transitions passing time in the corridor self-care including toileting and other related noninstructional areas.
  • Accompany students on field trips for the purpose of assisting with supervision.
  • Construct copy and distribute and use materials as needed.
  • Assist teachers with parent contact as requested to foster effective and participatory parent involvement in student education.
  • Participate in the IEP process and serve as a resource for the student evaluation team as needed.
  • Follow all applicable safety rules procedures and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of information regarding students employees and others.
  • Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students staff and others contacted in the course of work.
  • Effective writing and verbal communication skills.

Experience

  • Prior experience working with students with disabilities with learning communication and emotionalneeds
  • Data collection experience preferred
  • Safety care or CPI training preferred
  • Highly Qualified: 2 years of college credits or equivalent
