Job Description

The Ando Lab in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Cornell University investigates how enzymes function and evolve by developing and applying advanced structural biology tools. Our research focuses on how protein motions enable complex behaviors such as catalysis and regulation. We study proteins of evolutionary significance including enzymes that use metallocofactors to catalyze chemically challenging reactions as well as those with intricate allosteric mechanisms. The lab is a tight-knit interdisciplinary group committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment. We are currently seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented technician to support two key initiatives in the lab.

The lab technician will contribute to a new multi-institutional effort aimed at building the infrastructure to make protein dynamics derived from diffuse X-ray scattering publicly accessible alongside traditional static structural data. The primary responsibility of this role will be to produce high-quality protein samples and crystals to generate benchmark datasets for the broader structural biology parallel the technician will support ongoing research by assisting lab members in the expression and purification of challenging enzymes for advanced structural and functional studies. Some of these enzymes are oxygen-sensitive but no prior experience with anaerobic techniques is required training will be provided. This is a professional staff position with well-defined responsibilities that requires a high degree of reliability organization and professionalism. At the same time the technician will receive mentoring and support and gain valuable hands-on experience in research.

While position responsibilities vary every member of our community is expected to foster a culture of belonging and a healthy work environment by communicating across differences; being cooperative collaborative open and welcoming; showing respect compassion and empathy; engaging and supporting others regardless of background or perspective; speaking up when others are being excluded or treated inappropriately; and supporting work/life integration of oneself and others.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associates degree in biochemistry or a related field and up to 2 years relevant experience or equivalent combination.
  • Experience with protein purification techniques including affinity size-exclusion and ion-exchange chromatography.
  • Experience with molecular cloning methods such as Gibson assembly site-directed mutagenesis and PCR.
  • Experience with bacterial cell culture work.
  • Experience with DNA work including plasmid extraction sequencing primer design.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite tools.

  • Interest in structural biology or biophysics research.
  • Strong commitment to scientific rigor safety and collegiality.
  • Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some experience in research setting after college (e.g. an internship).
  • Familiarity with some biophysical characterization techniques.
  • Familiarity with biological databases such as the Protein Data Bank (PDB) proteomics resources and basic bioinformatics tools.

The anticipated start date is November 1 2025. Your complete application will include BOTH a cover letter and resume.
