Job Description

The Indirect Procurement Manager Japan is responsible for developing and executing the country-level strategy for indirect procurement categories ensuring alignment with global and regional procurement goals. The role acts as a strategic business partner to cross-functional stakeholders across commercial corporate and site-based functions driving value through cost optimization supplier performance innovation and compliance.

This role will be critical in shaping local sourcing strategies while leveraging global and regional agreements ensuring procurement excellence in a complex matrixed organization.

Category Strategy & Execution:

  • Lead the execution of indirect procurement strategies across key categories such as Marketing Services IT Professional Services Facilities Management HR Services and R&D.
  • Manage the full procurement lifecycle from sourcing to contract management ensuring alignment with business objectives.

Business Partnering & Stakeholder Management:

  • Build strong trust-based relationships with internal stakeholders at country level including senior leaders in Finance HR IT Commercial and Operations.
  • Proactively understand business needs and co-develop sourcing solutions that deliver value beyond savings (e.g. innovation speed to market risk mitigation).
  • Act as the procurement point of contact for Japan ensuring high stakeholder engagement and satisfaction.

Supplier & Contract Management:

  • Negotiate and manage supplier contracts in alignment with local regulatory requirements and corporate policies.
  • Drive supplier performance risk management and innovation initiatives through regular performance reviews and KPI monitoring.

Governance & Compliance:

  • Ensure adherence to global procurement policies and procedures and promote best-in-class sourcing practices.
  • Support internal and external audit requirements and ensure full transparency in procurement processes.

 

Collaboration in a Matrix Environment:

  • Work in close collaboration with regional and global category leads to align local execution with global strategy.
  • Serve as a local ambassador for the global procurement function promoting consistency and knowledge-sharing.

Qualifications :

  • Bachelors degree in Business Supply Chain Engineering or a related field; Masters degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 510 years of experience in Indirect Procurement preferably within the pharmaceutical or healthcare industry or experience in a regulated industry ideally pharmaceuticals with understanding of compliance and audit requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a large multinational or matrixed organization with the ability to influence without direct authority.
  • Strong category expertise in at least 23 of the following: Marketing Services Professional Services IT Facilities HR Services Travel.
  • Proven ability to manage complex stakeholder environments and deliver measurable value through procurement initiatives.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in both English (mandatory) and Japanese (business-level or fluent).
  • Strong negotiation contract management and supplier relationship management skills.
  • Proficient in procurement tools (e.g. Coupa Ariba SAP) and analytics.
  • CIPS or other relevant procurement certification a plus.
  • Demonstrated success in implementing change and driving process improvements in procurement organizations.
