Under the direct supervision of a registered nurse the Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) performs assigned duties to support patient care to all ages. Duties include medication administration per scope of practice collection of lab samples (e.g. drawing blood urine glucose testing newborn metabolic
screening) obtaining vital signs taking patient histories starting IVs insertion/removal of foleys newborn bath assist with feeding newborns facilitating skin to skin breast feeding education mother-baby care education/discharge teaching dressing changes use of a bladder scanner assit with ambulation/fall prevention perineal care quantitative blood loss and surgical scrub technician. LVN will report observations regarding patient status to the registered nurse. LVN will also support department activities (e.g. compile packets check crash carts stocking unit and cleaning work areas). The LVN can serve as unit clerk and can order tests using computer system. Assembles maintains and files the medical record according to department policy and procedure. The LVN may be assigned other duties in addition to the major responsibilities listed above. Employees are responsible for the completion of unit competency checklist annual Safety Review current certifications (CPR and NRP) and license (LVN) by maintaining continuing education units as required by governing board and hospital policy.
