Job Description

The University of Iowa Health Care Bioengineering has an outstanding opportunity to join our team as a Biomedical Equipment Technician this role you will test calibrate fabricate repair and maintain electronic and electro-mechanical equipment of limited complexity used in a patient care or medical/biological environment under direction functional supervision.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Tests the performance and operating characteristics of medical electronic and electro mechanical equipment of limited complexity to ensure compliance with established performance and safety standards.
  • Documents the results of equipment safety/performance tests.
  • Diagnoses problems and performs corrective maintenance and/or calibration as required on medical electronic and electro-mechanical equipment of limited complexity.
  • Documents actions required to correct equipment malfunctions.
  • Fabricates new electronic equipment as required from schematic diagrams and layout drawings
  • Orders parts and supplies as required in the maintenance and fabrication of medical electronic and electro-mechanical equipment.
  • Attends workshops conferences and specialized training courses to keep abreast of the field.
  • Reads studies or reviews appropriate publications related to the field.

On the Job Training Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Tests the performance and operating characteristics of medical electronic/electro mechanical equipment of limited complexity to ensure compliance with established performance and safety standards.
  • Documents the results of equipment safety/performance tests.
  • Diagnoses problems and performs corrective maintenance as required on medical electronic/electro-mechanical equipment of limited complexity.
  • Documents actions required to correct equipment malfunctions.
  • Orders parts and supplies as required in the maintenance and fabrication of medical electronic/electro-mechanical equipment.
  • Fabricates from schematic diagrams and layout drawings new electronic equipment as required.
  • Attends workshops conferences and specialized training courses to keep abreast of the field.
  • Attends and successfully completes required training courses such as:
    • Infection Control.
    • Fire Safety Training.
    • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.
  • Studies such material as deemed appropriate by the Manager of BioengineeringMaintenance. This may include:
    • Medical Terminology.
    • Introduction To Biomedical Equipment Technology.
    • Essential Standards for Biomedical Equipment Safety and Performance.
    • The College of Medicine and UI Health Care departmental organizational structure.

Purpose of the Training Program:

The purpose of the training program is to prepare qualified graduate technicians for Biomedical Equipment Technician positions. The training program provides on the job experience utilizing the highly specialized principles of medical equipment maintenance. Upon successful completion of the training program the trainee will have the minimum level of technical knowledge abilities skills and experience to qualify for the position of Biomedical Equipment Technician.

Progress of Biomedical Equipment Trainee Progress:

  • 0-3 Months: Receives explicit oral and/or written instructions/procedures typically at the beginning of each work assignment. Functional supervisor isavailable for instruction and guidance at any time. Work is reviewed upon completion.
  • 3-6 Months: Follows established procedures for each work assignment. Functional supervisor is available for instruction and guidance at any time. Work is spot reviewed upon completion.
  • 6-12 Months: Follows established procedures for each service work assignment. Direct functional supervision is provided for troubleshooting and corrective maintenance of routine electronic problems. Corrective maintenance is reviewed upon completion.
  • At the end of the Trainee program if credentials are met employee will become a Biomedical Equipment Technician.
