NICTD is hiring a Senior Trainmaster to help lead manage and supervise operations and personnel within the Transportation Department. This is a unique career opportunity for someone with a genuine interest in supervising training and overseeing NICTDs transportation operations as well as providing proactive participation on special tasks and projects. The successful applicant will be part of a close-knit team of dedicated transportation professionals who share a common interest in delivering safe and excellent passenger train service within Northwest Indiana and the Chicago metro area.Summary Description: The Senior Trainmaster will work closely with Trainmasters Chief Operating Officer Chief Transportation Officer Assistant Chief Transportation Officer Terminal Superintendent Road Foreman of Engines Assistant Road Foreman of Engines and Chief Dispatcher. The senior trainmaster will provide training oversight leadership and supervision of trainmasters engineers and conductors. Trainmasters ensure that employees always comply with NICTDs operating rules and practices. Providing daily proactive communication on real-time train performance and lead contact on incidents and accidents. Close coordination with CSS and Metra supervisory personnel as well as NICTD Police is also required.Description of Duties: - Coordinating revenue operations:Coordinating safe and efficient revenue operations.
- Improving operations:Implementing measures to improve operations.
- Managing incidents:Leading recovery and investigation efforts during accidents or incidents.
- Developing operational strategies for construction and maintenance activities.
- Collaborating with engineering mechanical foreign railroads and other personnel to make decisions.
- Analyzing delay patterns and providing feedback and solutions for improvement.
- Maintain conductor or engineer qualifications to train and operate when needed.
- Perform training of trainmasters engineers and conductors.
- Perform regular operational tests as required by 49 CFR 217.9 in conjunction with the Road Foreman of Engines (RFE) and Assistant Road Foreman of Engines.
- Participate in the maintenance of the Districts Employee Efficiency Testing program.
- Ride trains to assess employee compliance with rules and special instructions.
- Participate in the development and implementation of rules instruction and changes training accident investigation and discipline process.
- Serve as a hearing officer or witness in company hearings and investigations.
- Other duties as assigned based on the needs of Transportation.
Basic Qualifications: - 21 Years of age or older.
- High school diploma or GED. Associate or bachelors degree preferred but not required.
- Trainmaster assistant trainmasters or first level (foreman or higher) leadership or supervisory experience in a railroad or transit environment is strongly preferred. Licensed conductors or engineers with a combined minimum of two (2) years experience as a conductor and/or engineer also are eligible to apply. Excellent organizational and communication skills. Past Managerial experience preferred.
- Self-motivated and interested in motivating others to focus on proper and safe work habits.
- Must display a personal history of working in a safe prudent and organized manner.
- Ability to accurately input data into computer systems including fluency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Awareness of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) and knowledge of pertinent Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations.
- An expressed interest in aiding the District with multiple current and future projects.
- Satisfactory operating driving and attendance records.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in all forms of weather.
- Ability to work varying shift schedules including nights and weekends as needed in support of the Districts operations.
Railroad Experience: Persons with prior railroad employment must be: (1) presently employed by a railroad or (2) be able to provide written evidence of their furlough for economic reasons (e.g. furlough notice or letter from railroad); or (3) written evidence from the railroad establishing that they are eligible to be rehired. Schedule: Trainmasters have hours and days off assigned by the Assistant Chief Transportation Officer. Schedules and assignments are subject to change based on the needs of the service and managerial staffing requirements. Trainmasters can expect and must answer off-duty calls from other managers and employees as well as calls for help with situational emergencies.Supervision: The position reports to the Assistant Chief Transportation Officer.Work Environment: The employee occasionally may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level ranges from quiet to moderately loud. Duties include service in varying outdoor conditions applicable to NICTDs service area. The employee must be able to climb and walk on uneven surfaces in all weather conditions. The employee also must be able to pass the standard physical examination to qualify for service as an engineer.Salary and Benefits: The expected salary range is $95000-$100000. Health care dental care vacation holidays supplemental pension plans Railroad Retirement Board benefits and comp time are some of the benefits available. Credit for time served in other railroad employment including approved military leaves will be applied in determining vacation day entitlements.
