Job Description

General Summary of Position:

This being a promotional opportunity only current UML Employees within the same Bargaining unit are eligible to apply for this position.

The Associate Director Career Advising & Programming supports the mission of the Career & Co-op Center serves in a key leadership role providing supervision to career advising team members coordinates scalable or one to many programming opportunities and supports the Career Champions program.
Additionally the Associate Director provides direct career advising education and guidance to students and alumni through individual appointments workshops and career events.

Career Advising & Instruction:

  • Counsel advise educate & coach students and alumni (clients) on a wide range of career development topics including but not limited to major selection career assessment job search coaching experiential education opportunities graduate school planning career management and career decision-making.
  • Develop & present workshops seminars panels and other events to encourage informed career decision making effective job search practices and self-awareness.
  • Recommend administer & interpret assessments to build a clients self-awareness and to discuss as part of a clients job selection career fit work performance and career success.

Program Planning & Development:

  • Actively guide the development planning and implementation of career-related programs including but not limited to workshops signature events and career discovery programs. This includes determining staffing for events and ensuring all events are posted to Handshake and the office website
  • Coordinate what sections of credit-bearing career development courses will be offered each term and determine staffing for these.
  • Support/advise staff who are assigned to work with the Career Champions program.
  • Gather data related to workshops signature events career discovery programs classroom presentations and credit-bearing courses and make recommendations about changes to these offerings.

Management & Administration:

  • Supervise full and part-time professional staff as assigned by the director.
  • Provide guidance as needed or requested to other UMass Lowell career professionals in their work with clients.
  • Assist the director with reporting relevant data about career programming to internal and external constituents.
  • Support development of new initiatives through research of related information sources and reports.
  • Assist with training and mentoring new and continuing career advising staff.
  • Collaborate with career advising leadership team to ensure annual updates to the website and print handouts are completed involving other career advising staff and the communications & programming specialist.

Marketing & Promotion:

  • Educate students alumni as well as academic and administrative departments on services provided through outreach strategies such as collaboration with student organizations and implementation of event schedules.

Campus Relations & Career Engagement:

  • Actively partner with 2-3 colleges and assigned administrative departments to develop and deliver relevant career development programs for students; for the colleges this work will often happen in collaboration with career advisers.
  • Support campus events and initiatives through participation in division and campus wide committees work groups etc.
  • Gain knowledge of employment trends in key industries and communicate that information to department staff and more generally to faculty staff and students throughout the University.
  • Engage industry professionals in career development activities.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

Education:

  • Masters degree in higher education counseling or related field

Experience:

  • Minimum of eight years related professional experience in career development experiential education student development employer relations and/or university relations with at least 3 of these years in higher education.

Skills:

  • Career-related counseling/advising communication (interpersonal verbal and written) teaching/presenting.

Preferred Qualifications/Additional Considerations:

  • Prior supervision of undergraduate graduate and/or professional staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver career advising for diverse populations through individual drop-in and group appointments; workshops; and other programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and develop relationships with clients as well as faculty and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to use technology in work with clients as well as administrative work.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate efforts for collaboration and delivery of services
