Description:
This position includes teaching Junior High (Grades 79) English Language Arts Social Studies and Healthy Living. At the Senior High level (Grades 1012) the teacher will provide humanities and elective courses as needed which may include Global Studies 12 Child Studies 11 and Learning Strategies 1012. Specific subjects and grade levels will be determined based on student enrollment and scheduling needs. This is a morning-only position Monday to Friday. Please note: this position does not include the instruction of Math or Science.
The successful candidate will provide classroom instruction and supervision to students in an alternative education setting. They will demonstrate the ability to build strong supportive relationships with youth and engage them using an inquiry-based approach grounded in the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework. At the junior high level the teacher will integrate English Language Arts Social Studies and Healthy Living in ways that promote relevance curiosity and student voice. At the senior high level they will deliver humanities and elective courses aligned with student needs and school scheduling.
The ideal candidate will have experience supporting individual learners and small groups through personalized instruction flexible programming and the implementation of academic and behavioral plans. They will work within the Nova Scotia Inclusive Education Policy and apply student-centered approaches such as trauma-informed practices restorative approaches and social-emotional learning to foster a safe responsive and engaging learning environment.
Collaboration is essential to this role. The teacher will work closely with support staff and outside agencies participate in regular team meetings and maintain accurate student records in PowerSchool including TIENET.
Qualifications & Experience:
Valid Nova Scotia Teacher Certification
Bachelor of Education - Secondary
University education in English Social Studies
OR a minimum of three (3) years of experience teaching a minimum of 50% English at the junior high level within the last seven (7) years with positive performance appraisals and/or references
OR a minimum of three (3) years of experience teaching a minimum of 50% humanities at the high school level within the last seven (7) years with positive performance appraisals and/or references
Desired Qualifications and Experience:
Experience teaching junior high English Language Arts Social Studies and Healthy Living aligned with Nova Scotias renewed curriculum
Experience teaching senior high humanities subjects such as Global Studies Child Studies and Learning Strategies
Experience teaching in an alternative education setting or working with students requiring flexible and responsive learning environments
Experience integrating English Language Arts Social Studies and Healthy Living through inquiry-based learning at the junior high level
Professional development and classroom experience in inquiry-based learning approaches
Professional development in literacy and adolescent learning; experience with thinkSRSD would be considered an asset
Strong understanding of the Nova Scotia Inclusive Education Policy and Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
Commitment to culturally responsive pedagogy and the ability to apply it meaningfully in daily practice
Experience developing and delivering personalized academic and behavioral plans including supporting students with individualized needs
Ability to apply effective crisis prevention and de-escalation strategies to support students with behavioral and emotional regulation needs
Experience using trauma-informed practices and professional development related to understanding the impact of trauma on learning behavior and social engagement
Professional development in supporting students with mental health needs and promoting emotional well-being in the classroom
Experience using restorative approaches and social-emotional learning strategies to support diverse student needs
Excellent communication skills (oral written and digital) with the ability to build strong relationships with students families and colleagues
Proven ability to work as an active and collaborative member of a school team including participation in program planning problem-solving and joint decision-making
Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and act with professionalism at all times
Willingness to engage in ongoing professional development and reflective practice
Ability to accept and apply feedback showing openness to learning and a collaborative spirit
Completion of WHMIS and First Aid or willingness to obtain upon hire
