The Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh is seeking a motivated student for a Research & Educational Content Assistant position. This is a mostly remote role designed to accommodate a students class schedule and weekly work-study hours. The Holocaust Center is working to preserve and share the stories of Holocaust survivors who settled in the Pittsburgh areaonce home to as many as 350 survivors. As part of this mission we are creating Bio Cards that tell individual survivor stories in brief accessible formats to be shared with students tour groups and attendees at public events.
The student in this role will research and write content for these cards and assist in their design and production. They will receive feedback and support from Holocaust Center staff throughout the process.
About the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh
The Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh (HCP) connects the horrors of the Holocaust and antisemitism with injustices of today. Through education the HCP seeks to address these injustices and empower individuals to build a more civil and humane society. The HCP reaches thousands of students educators and members of the public annually through engaging cultural events and lectures a robust Generations Speaker Bureau CHUTZ-POW! Superheroes of the Holocaust comic book series our public exhibit Revolving Doors and free and affordable resources for teachers students and the community about the Holocaust and dismantling antisemitism.
Established in 1980 the Holocaust Center was created as a living memorial to honor survivors who came to Pittsburgh to rebuild their lives and local soldiers who helped liberate the camps. Rather than build a statue or monument community members wanted a comprehensive resource center that would help people learn about the Holocaust and counter intolerance and hate in all its forms.
Job Duties:
Research Holocaust survivors who lived in the Pittsburgh area using online databases newspaper archives books and other resources
Write and edit short biographies summarizing each survivors life including: Birthplace and early life Holocaust experiences Immigration to the U.S. and resettlement in Pittsburgh Life after the war
Design the layout of the Bio Cards (knowledge of Canva or other design platforms helpful)
Incorporate staff feedback on both content and design
Assist with printing and production coordination
Optional involvement in other activities depending on interest and availability: Helping at public events or exhibit openings Supporting group tours and Participating in outreach and tabling events
The student will have a short (1520 minute) biweekly Zoom check-in with the supervisor and/or other Holocaust Center staff to discuss progress and questions
Preferred Skills and Qualifications:
Strong writing and research skills
Interest in history education communications English or related fields
Familiarity with Canva or basic design tools
Prior coursework or personal interest in Holocaust history WWII or Jewish studies is a plus but not required
