Job Description

Are you a compassionate and experienced Occupational Therapist Assistant with a passion for making a meaningful impact in the lives of individuals facing homelessness and poverty The Mustard Seed is seeking a caring and dedicated Occupational Therapy Assistant to join our dynamic team.

The Occupational Therapy Assistant will support a one-year transitional housing program grounded in recovery-oriented systems of care. This role emphasizes empowering clients to develop the skills necessary for independent living including financial literacy employment readiness and connection to community-based supports such as mental and physical healthcare social and recreational programming and cultural services. Working under the supervision of occupational therapists the assistant will play a key role in delivering client-centered programming advocating for access to resources and supporting clients in navigating complex systems. The successful candidate will contribute to a holistic and collaborative care model by working closely with interdisciplinary team members.

Employment Type: Fixed Term (September to March 2026)
Schedule: Monday to Tuesday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Wednesday 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Educate and empower clients in the recovery program to understand and achieve their rights and responsibilities as participating members of society;
  • Assists in scheduling preparing and implementing therapeutic programs on the recovery floor;
  • Perform occupational therapy treatment tasks as delegated and supervised by occupational therapists;
  • Assist people with chronic diseases to self-manage their challenges;
  • Advocate for client as needed both to access resources within and outside the organization;
  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals such as doctors nurses and social workers to provide comprehensive care for clients;
  • Ensure clients have accessed external resources by completing follow up with clients and agencies;
  • Support facilitation of programming as necessary;
  • Maintain appropriate records of planned programs and attendance;
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date client records ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards;
  • Provide input into program evaluation upon request;
  • Participate in outings and other special events;


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Successful completion of an associates degree from an accredited occupational therapy assistant program;
  • First Aid Certificate;
  • Use of various functional assessment tools;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Calgarys community (mental) health and addiction resources and adept in navigation of those systems:
  • A self starter with the ability to work in a cross-functional team & accomplish goals;
  • Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Office Programs); experience with Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) an asset;
  • Good organizational time management skills and advocacy skills;
  • Excellent written oral and interpersonal skills;
  • Valid Drivers License (Class 5) and access to reliable vehicle;


WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Employees are to be aware that many of our clients may experience difficulties or impairment at times which could result in them uttering threats discriminatory statements and other insults at your person. This may in a raised voice or in seeing unpredictable behaviour up to and including the possibility of them becoming aggressive
  • Training on how to respond is provided but this is to be considered typical working conditions. Many of our clients are unaware of the impact of these comments
  • Time more than regular working hours may be required on occasion
  • This position is a mixture of working between health and wellness centre various local Mustard Seed sites and external agencies both in Calgary/Edmonton (including but not limited to provincial remand centres)
  • This position may entitle working and driving in extreme weather conditions. Being aware of the daily weather report is essential.
  • Local travel to various Mustard Seed sites and external agencies will be required
  • The working environment for this position requires moderate amounts of walking standing sitting and daily interactions with colleagues and guests
  • Fast paced and demanding work environment
  • Moderate to extreme mental effort required to respond to highly intense situations


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
  • This position requires the use of a company vehicle. Candidate must have and maintain valid drivers licence and will need to consent to a drivers abstract request.
