Job Summary

Description of Work

Position is a Psychological Program Manager position located at Central Prison Healthcare Complex in Raleigh which houses approximately 1318 close custody male offenders.

Reports to the Healthcare Complex Chief of Behavioral Health (CBH) and works with mental health medical and correctional staff. Duties for this position include but are not limited to:

  • Closely involved in planning organizing reviewing and updating psychological services.
  • Provide supervision to behavioral health staff (i.e. psychologist clinical social workers recreational therapists human services provider program coordinator and correctional behavioral specialists which includes but is not limited to on-call coverage treatment services training licensure requirements etc.
  • Oversee day-to-day staffing schedules program/staff efficiency quality performance and outcomes. Develop and implement psychology programs guidelines protocols and SOPs.
  • Prepares reports summaries and responses regarding program needs problems and functions as requested by Behavioral Health Administration.
  • Communicate with custody nursing and other healthcare staff to support treatment team models and teamwork.
  • Plan and coordinate activity of inpatient mental health and residential units.
  • Work with psychology staff to develop and implement patient interventions.
  • Confer with facility clinicians regarding emotional and psychiatric problems displayed by inmates especially with respect to self-injurious behaviors.

Direct services performed with clinical independence and considerable autonomy in selecting appropriate diagnostic tests.

Management Preferences:

  • General knowledge of psychological program planning organizing coordinating and evaluating.
  • Thorough knowledge of objective psychological education and developmental tests including those of a complex and comprehensive nature.
  • Advanced skill in the proper application and interpretation of those tests and in preparing and presenting comprehensive and cohesive reports.
  • Ability to supervise and evaluate the work of other employees.
  • Correctional and/or forensic experience.


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Eligibility for licensure in North Carolina under the provisions of the NC Psychology Practice Act (G.S. 90-270) and two years of professional psychological experience one of which must be postdoctoral. Refer to the law for specifics regarding experience requirements.

The team of physicians nurses behavioral health services dental services psychiatric services pharmacy services and licensed healthcare administration services work together to provide emergent acute routine and chronic health care as well as preventive medicine at all prison facilities. They also coordinate with specialists and other clinical consultants outside of prisons throughout the state to ensure comprehensive health and well-being towards a safe transition from prison improving public health and decreasing recidivism.
