DescriptionThe Thermal Systems Engineer is responsible for the prediction of heat transfer and energy usage in a vehicle. The specific focus is analyzing the powertrain cooling and heat management of forward vehicle programs. Thermal Systems Engineering integrates attributes including Mass properties Aerodynamics Climate Fuel economy and Performance feel. Members of the section use CAE and physical test methods to quantify system level impacts on the vehicle underhood underbody and cabin due to powertrain heat. The responsibilities of the Thermal Systems Engineer include design development validation and launch including prototype builds of thermal systems subsystems and components.
ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities include:
- Leading the product development process relative to engineering design changes and support any associated commercial changes.
- Support program meetings and cross functional teams in the execution of targets deliveries and confirmation of cost weight and quality.
- Provide on-site support for prototype testing.
- Lead and support program discussion cross functional team meetings as applicable.
- On time delivery of GPDS deliverables of Energy Management attribute for Program to and beyond.
- Manage issue resolution to ensure deliverables are met.
- Work with Cycle Plan & Product Strategy teams to evaluate and translate Corporate and Regulatory requirements into the target setting process & attribute delivery process.
- Conduct scenario analyses to determine optimal product line-ups to deliver competitive attributes at competitive costs.
- Utilize attribute futuring methods and tools to support the target setting process.
- Utilize CAE tools and methodologies to assist in the development and implementation of vehicle attributes.
- Provide necessary documentation to verify product sign-off activity in support program and engineering milestones.
- Deliver Global Attribute relevant information for all programs.
QualificationsBasic Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science or Engineering.
- Good understanding of vehicle energy usage and Systems Engineering.
- Good understanding of powertrain systems functionality and efficiency improvement including ICE and xHEV powerpacks.
- Strong background on fluid mechanics heat transfer and thermodynamics
- Experience and knowledge of heat exchangers (fin and tube micro-channel shell and tube co-axial and brazed plate)
- In-depth knowledge of Powertrain matching and analysis.
- Good understanding of non-powertrain systems e.g. brakes steering tires underbody shields among others.
- Self-directed confident and resilient individual with excellent verbal and written communication skills in both English and Spanish
- Project Management skills
- Excellent work planning and issue resolution skills
- Experience working with or leading teams globally.
- Familiarity with the utilization of CAE methods and tools including the advantages and disadvantages.
- Able to travel to Ford facilities (MPG DTFDDC etc).
- CFD knowledge
Preferred Qualifications / Other Information:
- Masters /Ph.D. degree in engineering or similar.
- 2 years experience using CFD tools
- Experience in working with teams globally.
- Basic knowledge of any programming language
- Powertrain design and calibration experience.
- Proficiency in Excel Powerpoint Matlab ATI MyCanic DET.
