Job Description

Project Manager Onsite Welding Operations

Purpose:
Weld America a division of Colonnas Shipyard Inc. is seeking a hands-on technically strong Operational Welding Lead who can manage day-to-day field welding operations direct crews coordinate multiple job sites deliver turn-key fabrication solutions and support job planning and execution.
This role combines technical welding expertise crew leadership project coordination estimating support and field resource planning. The ideal candidate is a practical problem-solver with a strong welding/fabrication background and project execution experience.
This full-time onsite position may require occasional flexibility in working hours as well as hours beyond a standard workweek to accommodate business needs.
Job Description:
Field Operations & Supervision
  • Lead and coordinate welding crews at multiple job sites ensuring proper execution of work and adherence to safety and quality standards
  • Serve as the primary field liaison for project execution managing scope schedule technical compliance and budgets
  • Maintain strong daily communication with welders customers QA and management
  • Make personnel management decisions including but not limited to hiring termination and disciplinary determinations
Project Execution & Support
  • Attend kickoff meetings and site walks with customers to evaluate scope constraints and resources
  • Interpret welding symbols procedures (WPS) and specifications in accordance with AWS/ASME codes
  • Assist with material takeoffs equipment rental coordination and mobilization planning
  • Ensure welder continuity and compliance with certification requirements
  • Coordinate with QA/QC for hold points NDE and final inspection activities
  • Ensure proper handling and use of consumables filler metals and critical materials
Project Management
  • Assign labor and equipment effectively across active jobs and prepare resource assignment reports
  • Track progress field changes and delays; submit and approve employee timesheets provide feedback for billing change orders and job closeout. Includes creating and briefing Project Manager Worksheets.
  • Attend project turnover and startup meetings to ensure value stream alignment
  • General oversight of the Weld America shop ensuring safety organization cleanliness and capability/capacity are industry leading
Estimating & Job Planning Support
  • Support estimation for onsite welding work scopes including labor material equipment and access planning
  • Provide input to project managers on schedule durations crew sizes and productivity expectations
Qualifications:
  • Must have at least ten (10) years of experience in structural or industrial welding fabrication or ship repair
  • Must have at least five (5) years of experience in project analysis and/or estimating in industrial heavy fabrication projects to include scheduling and man-loading
  • Must possess extensive knowledge of welding fitting and burning processes construction manufacturing processes heavy manufacturing processes materials and estimating methods.
  • Must be able to work independently and within a team managing multiple priorities effectively.
  • Must be willing to travel to job sites regularly often with short notice locally and non-local
  • Must have strong attention to detail and the ability to deliver quality work under tight deadlines.
  • Must have strong hands-on field experience managing welding crews in industrial or marine settings
  • Must have working knowledge of AWS D1.1 ASME Section IX and applicable industry codes
  • Must be familiar with welder qualifications continuity logs filler metal selection and welding documentation
  • Must be able to read blueprints develop field-fit solutions and work with minimal supervision
  • Must have experience managing work across multiple job sites with a rotating crew
  • Must be familiar with project documentation (timesheets field change orders material requisitions)
  • Must be able to support project managers with planning estimating and customer interface
  • Must have strong organization and multitasking skills; thrive in a fast-paced environment
Desired Qualifications:
  • Welding inspection experience or CWI certification a plus
  • Willingness to train and/or instruct welders to develop new qualifications
  • Willingness to perform project welding if the need arises
  • Experience with developing customer solutions in a way that meets compliance and QA standards
  • Knowledge of CNC and manual machining
  • Maintain current industry awareness and ability to adapt quickly to new/emerging technologies evolving business needs industry trends and best practices.
Travel Requirements:
  • Minimal Travel; 10% or less.
Physical Requirements:
  • Sit Stand Walk Bend Squat Climb Reach Push and Pull Stoop Crawl Kneel Balance Lift and Carry various objects and equipment.
  • General office environment. Work is generally sedentary in nature but may require standing and walking for up to 30% of the time.
  • Lighting and temperature are adequate and there is minimal exposure to hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise dust etc. Hear talk and smell.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Work is generally performed within an office environment with standard office equipment available but also requires safe navigation and regular partnership with operations teams within shipyard/industrial environments.
  • A considerable amount of time is spent operating a personal computer.
  • Must be able to climb up and down stairs and spend time moving throughout the facility and onboard marine vessels.
